I recently shared a vid with Glenn giving reasons why making an album was a bad idea. Well, now how about a Glenn video with reasons why making an album is a GREAT IDEA!!! After his last vid, the response was so significant that he made a vid with all of the reasons people that you should make an album.

1.)INVESTING IN YOURSELF:
Musicians do often spend money on things they don’t need. Why not spend a bit of money on something that represents what you are about musically. After all it’s an investment if yourself and your music. It shows a high level of commitment.

2.)YOU”LL HAVE SOMETHING TO SELL AT SHOWS

If you can sell music and merch at your shows, congratulations, you have made it to a new level. Things are a bit tough right now in terms of live shows in that some places are having them and some places are not. Still, it’s great if you have a show to be able to have a copy of your music to sell to fans. People still actually buy CDs and even cassettes at shows!

3.)YOULL HAVE SOMETHING TO SIGN AT SHOWS

It gives the fans a personal experience with the band. Some fans will want you to sign the thing that they are buying. So it’s important for the band to be at the merch booth when not on stage, so that they can sign stuff and talk with fans and maybe even help with sales.

4.)YOU HATE MONEY

People freaked out a bit about the last video, thus this video. It’s true, musicians do sometimes sign bad deals and even local artists can make financial mistakes. It’s a good idea to be aware of how the business side works.

5.)YOUR IN A ROSEBUSH BAND
One of those Black Metal bands whose logo looks a lot like a thorny rosebush and can’t be read by normal human beings. Black Metal bands have some fanatical fans. These fans will often buy cds and tapes, yes cassette tapes, of the bands music. So if you have serious street cred as a Black Metal act, it’s time to print up some merch.

6.)CROWDFUNDING

This is where a band starts a campaign online and lets their fans put up the money for their album. This is a great plan. If you can pull this off, you can get your album paid for entirety by fans. It also guarantees sales. The “perk” for folks donating money is that they get a copy of the music. It does require that a band have a following. If nobody knows who your band is, it’s very hard to raise money.

7.)SINGLE STRATEGY
It’s still a good idea to put out a single, but if you are putting out an album, then the single does what it used to do in the old days. It serves as an advert for the album. You can keep putting out singles for this same purpose. Also, you can make a video that goes with the single, just like in the old days. This too can help promote sales of the album. Your best songs will make for your best singles. Some things never change.

8.)DON”T OVERDO IT
You can pack 72 minutes on a CD, but should you? It’s a good idea to leave them wanting more. If you push too much music on people, they can tire of it. Put your best stuff on your release. You don’t need to pack every minute of a CD.

9.)WORKING ON AN ALBUM CAN BE THERAPY

If your day job is awful, just having something to look forward to, like a new album, can be a life saver. It gives you something to focus on that you want to actually do. It’s always a good idea to have something in life to look forward to.

10.)VINYL RETURNS TO GLORY
In 2020 27.5 MILLION vinyl records were sold in the states. This is a staggering amount of vinyl. It’s a drop in the bucket compared to the peak of the market in decades past, but it’s huge considering the format was declared dead a long time ago. Also, cassettes are making a comeback as I’ve posted about. Especially for certain genres, (synthwave/shoegaze/metal) people seem to love their new music on good old tape. Bands can take advantage of this and print up some music.

11.)YOU MIGHT CONVERT SOME KIDS WHO ONLY LISTEN ON THEIR PHONES

Your music might get folks to actually put down their phone for a few minute to listen to your music.

It’s important to go into it with your eyes open. Most recording projects don’t make their money back. Then again, most movies don’t make their money back either. There is a classic business principle that states 20 percent of most ventures make 80 percent of the money. Which means 80 percent of ventures don’t make money. If you can crowd fund it, great! If you are a new band without a following, you will probably have to pay your own way. Still, you can record/mix/master at home and just pay for the printing of Vinyl/CD/cassette, whatever works. It can have it’s benefits. It’s important to figure out if it’s the right move for you.

I think that was the title of his first video and the name of his youtube channel smile.gif

He evidently gets a LOAD of flak each time he takes a stand on anything and makes a companion vid right away!!
