Alternate Tunings

Hello everyone, I have what is probably a naive question.

I tuned my guitar last night to e flat to work on Marcus' Harvest of Sorrow lesson. Does changing the tuning back and forth do anything bad to the instrument? I was talking to a friend this morning about it and he said it depended on your guitar and bridge set up. I have a strat and he said it was not a problem. Is that correct? What other thoughts come to mind?

He was probably talking about a floating bridge like a Floyd Rose or Ibanez Edge. I wouldn't say tuning with those bridges hurts the instrument but it may make you wanna hurt yourself tongue.gif

Well it pretty much depends on what gauge your strings are and how much you alter the tuning.

If you use .09 strings or fatter, tuning half a step lower won't change much. The same goes for tuning into chords.

However, if you would decide to tune to drop B. You might want to readjust your truss rod as such a big diffrence will have effect on your neck.

These are the strings that are on my strat.....

Fender Super 250R, Nickel Plated Steel,
Gauges: (.010, .013, .017, .026, .036, .046)

would they should be OK ehhhhh

.010 are pretty much made for tuning half a step down (imho).

unless you do really crazy things you'll have no problems whatsoever.

If you don´t mind being like a whole tone up, you can use partial capo and don't change the guitar tunning.
