I think this is probably the fourth time I posted something about 80's hot rodded Marshalls, maybe I should start a series tongue.gif Anyhow, I think the hot rodded Marshall tone is the ultimate tone for hard rock/metal. Its tight bottom end gives the bass guitar room to be heard. The midrange is aggressive, very detailed, and cuts through the mix. And of course, when cranked, the amp sounds like its about explode biggrin.gif Reminds me of a Harley at wide open throttle with open pipes.

This song blends three things very well: crunchy Marshall tones, well defined bass lines, and is embellished with very "Stratty" riffs. Actually, make that four things: the cow bell is used to great effect tongue.gif

One thing missing from many metal and hard rock songs is bass lines that play an integral part of the song. This song simply wouldn't work without the the bass. Skid Row's bassist is the primary song writer, and it shows in many of their songs.

So, heres the question(s): How much prominence do you think the bass should have in a song? Should its presence have equal footing in the overall sound of a song?

Hey Mud ! I'm totally with you on the Marshall thang ! (I'm not biased at all am I ?) tongue.gif

There's something about that raw midrange that cuts through like a chainsaw.. but a nice, thick chainsaw made of meat. If that makes sense.... ok, err... moving on..

I agree that the bass should be given the attention it derserves. If you have 3 stringed instruments (assuming it's a 2 guitar band) that are all capable of melody and harmony, then why not use their harmonic capabilites ?

Think of them as a mini orchestra smile.gif

I'm a big fan of Marshalls, and my favorite is still Super Lead. JCMs are OK, but nothing like the bassy roar of an good ol' Plexi biggrin.gif

I do not know how, but I prefer to hear it when someone plays on it, while I'm in the audience, than next to him on the stage !!
Strange?

Even though you own one, I don't think you're biased. I'm sure you already made up your mind long before you ever got your Marshall. Its not like you got it when you first started playing just for the name.

Since you have a JVM, do you think it can do that hot rodded JCM tone?

True, true.. well all the channels are supposed to be modelled on classic Marshall tones throughout the years.. and one of the high gain channels is based on a modded JCM 800.. it's the sound that I use for lead I think.. I think my rhythm tone is similar but with a different mid construction. However, I'm sure it's not quite as good a the real thing but it's the closest I'll get unless I get an 800 ! cool.gif
