*Here is our BANDCAMP Page. http://divinusmortus.bandcamp.com/
Which will be the name for the overal project and I"m planning on guesting musicians from all over including folks here @ GMC! I wanted to start this thread to track our progress.
*PM ME IF YOU WANT TO JUMP IN!!!!
Dokugan has jumped in and is working on Drum Tracks and it's going great! Here is his KILLER reaper file. We are doing drums first to get the rythm elements sorted. Guitars will actually come last on each track as that's the bit that usually gives the least trouble
This looks and sounds great ! Man, I'm too committed with other things to get involved at the moment but I'd love to participate in the future !

No worries! Are you still gonna pitch in with the other virtual band thing I saw a bit back? What did we call it? "On Occasion" or "When I get time" something like that?

Feel free to do the same and share!!

This is probably a stupid question, but where is the dropbox? Where do I find the tracks?
Posted by: Todd Simpson Nov 13 2012, 05:25 PM
Here is the direct link Soldier! Shoot me an email addy and I'll add you to the access list!
Yeah, I like the ideas here too. I wouldn't mind trying some riffing ideas over it! My only thought would be to maybe have some variety to break up the pattern, as it pretty much is double kick all the way through. It is a good job though and the fills are well placed.
I've been trying to come up with some drums tracks myself but nothing too inspiring yet. I think I need one of these metal expansions for EZdrummer to inspire me more. I'm leaning towards Metal Machine with Andy Sneap and John Tempesta. Anyone here use this expansion kit or have an opinion on it?

Yep I have one and Metal Machine is way more better than original drums from hell. There's lot of drumming and even complete songs. I have used them with little bit tweaking of course. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!
Toontrack has released new ROCK SOLID EZX this mothn. You should check it too.

Thanks for the info! I think I'm probably going to go with Metal Machine. Just has a great sound without sounding to mechanical/triggered.
ROCK SOILD sounds good but it only has the one kick drum. I think Metal Machine probably will be more flexible too.

We not quite to the RIFF stage yet (not as far as this project and this track, but if you want to riff over this track to try things out so you've got something ready, GO FOR IT!!!)
DEGROOT: If you would, download this reaper file from Dokugans folder on our drop box and open it up. See if you can dig in to the bass drum drum track and save a version in YOUR folder with your changes so we can hear what you are thinking? I'd like everyone to try to dig in to the "click level" and put their hands on it if possible.
As for Metal Machine, I have it and it RAWKS. The only thing is, most people have DRUMS FROM HELL which also RAWKS. I would say get Drums From Hell first if possible for compatibility and the fact that it RAWKS. Then add Machine later for extra sonic choices. The DFH kit is a bit more flexible in terms of samples, IMHO. The MACHINE kit is very, very niche. It's perferct for what it is though.

I tried to get into Dokugans drums but wasn't able to see the separate tracks. Regardless, the track is pretty awesome as is and I don't really see myself making it better.
Thanks for the input about DFH and Metal Machine. I figured out more about the basic EZdrummer and think I can manage some of my ideas much better now (really new to working in this format). I checked out all the tracks in the dropbox and there is some really high quality drums (Vonhotch and Ville). I won't mess around too much with riffing until you think we are ready to go! Going to focus on getting a complete drum track finished first.

AWESOME I'm really digging where the drum tracks are at and I think we might make each one it's own song. Going to post soundcloud versions of all of them here for folks to hear.

DRUMS UPDATE!!!!
I"m hoping we can all learn and grow a bit as we work on this project together Here is a SPIFFFFFFFFFF drum track from VON HOTCH (DivinusMortus1 in his DropBox folder) and I've uploaded the original and a version with
Compressor Reverb E.Q.
I've added some quick fx/settings just to illustrate some possible settings that might work on drums in general. There are a billion ways to skin this particular cat and this is just one example, but take a look at the project file and click on FX to see the fx used (All are native to Reaper and require no additional software/installs)
Guys, your doing GREAT on drum tracks! Open up your REAPER files and experiment a bit adding Compression, Reverb, EQ, etc. And share your results. This is a great way to get your feet wet putting some "wet" (fx) on your drum bits. Please feel free to ask questions/provide tips on adding fx.
Here is a vid about using the plugins/fx built in to REAPER and making it easier/quicker.

Thanks. Glad you are liking it. The fxs made a ton of difference. I'm really liking the other tracks too. Especially Ville's first track.

I added this track to my Dropbox. What do you guys think? I am pretty happy with it because it's the first drum track I've done completely without preprogrammed beats. It's got eq, compression, and reverb. I think some of the fx's might need some tweeks, but as a whole I really like it. https://soundcloud.com/vonhotch/divinusmortus3/s-IaE9i
Posted by: Todd Simpson Jan 14 2013, 08:25 PM
Nice! You did all that BY HAND? FROM SCRATCH? No drag and drop whatsoever? I must say that's impressive. I"ve made beats that way before and it honestly took me quite a bit of effort. I do find that the stock beats are often close but not quite what I"m looking for. When I'm working on a track, I"ll typically start with something close and then end up having to rebuild it to make it match the accents of what I"m playing.
Did you upload the reaper project as well? I'd like to take a look at your settings on your channel strip to see what you working with on the fx. Nice job

Yes, I uploaded the reaper file too. But for some reason whenever I save my drums it always opens with the same default kit, (is it that way for everybody?) but I did this with the drum kit from hell. And thanks, I always had problems finding stock beats that went together I would find two that I wanted to put together but the tempo or something just seemed off. Once I figured out where eigth, quarter, etc.. notes were on the roll it started to make sense and I don't think it took me any longer to pull the beats out of my head than to search for something close to what I wanted. I'm curious to see what you have to say about my settings. It sounds better than none but some of the drums especially the toms to me seem a little lifeless. Something still seems off. Even through my cheap headphones.
Posted by: Todd Simpson Jan 16 2013, 04:17 AM
I'll check it out and give you some feedback. The drum kit defaulting back happens to me too, I usually have to go in an d manually load DFH each time. It's a pain, but not a huge pain.

Finally getting back to DIVINUS!!! It's been a while. Glad to have a moment to work on it again! I"ve been listening to drums by VILLE and WOW!!! NICE!!!!!!!!
I uploaded them to SOUNDCLOUD for a preview. What do you guys think? I'm thinking this might be our first tune!!!
*I don't have EZ Mix and a couple of other plugs, but the Midi programming is top notch!!!!

I took a shot at replacing all of the Non standard plugins in the original reaper project from VILLE with Reaper native plugins Anyone still up for it, download the project file and take a look.
*VILLE has done a KILLER job in creating this track and its done using the very spiff method of assigning a track to each drum sound. This is FAR superior to letting it live on just one stereo track since it allows you to put fx/eq etc. on individual tracks which results in more control and better sound.
Wooo hooo!! That drum track is pretty radical! It makes me wish I still had a kit set up in the garage to bash around on and burn up some excess energy! Nice job Ville, sounds really good man!

Cool I'll tab it out and feel free to modify it and add to it. It's got a bit of a stretch in in and requires some of our semi insane picking but after all the Vid chats i think you are more than ready!

VONHOTCH: Do you have any 7 string Guitar Pro Templates? My Guitar Pro installation won't actually let me make new documents, the NEW menu is perpetually blank for some reason so I have to edit old ones. I may need to reinstall. IT also seems to crash alot recently. Have you had any issues with it?
Here is the rythm done as a six string bit. Just start on 7 (low to transpose
Sweet! Fun lick! I have not had any problems with Guitar pro...I use Tux. But I have not had a problem writing 7 string tab with it. Here is a blank 7 string file. Let me know if it works for you.
Thanks!!! It opens just fine. Handy!!!! I'll make another tab for that lick

FREE SOFTWARE FOR USE ON OUR COLLABORATIVE PROJECT:
I wanted to share some free downloadables with you guys. Here is a FREE copy of
EZ MIX 2 LITE
and
EX DRUMMER LITE
That way without buying anything we can all use the same drumming program and the same version of EZ mix for spicing up various bits.
We are still using REAPER as our DAW so these two are our first standardized plugins to add in as part of our "Project Install".
