Thought I"d make a thread for the SHOUT project that SPOCK and I are involved in smile.gif It's just him and I working on creating a cover of the 80's classic SHOUT!!!! We have roped in Jon Bodan from HALCYON WAY To do vocals. It's moving along and an early version is nearly ready to preview for some feedback!! Til then here is a screen grab of the logic project. I always take screen grabs of proejcts as I work through them so I can go back later and glance at them to see what I was doing. It's quicker than loading the entire project smile.gif

We are using APPLE LOGIC X and it's been very spiff so far smile.gif Any MACINTOSH users out there, GET LOGIC X!!!!!! If you have used Garage Band, you can use LOGIC X smile.gif Very similar interface so the transition is very easy.

I dont think I would have guessed it was 'shout' just hearing the solo, it sounds like its gonna be are great version. Great playing, todd. dug the change in tone when you slid into the second part.
the riff right at the end of the solo is most badass as well btw smile.gif

Very close now. The song is out to the vocalist and bass player for their parts, and then we have a couple of options on a drummer - which will be determined soon.

I'm very pleased with the outcome of this project at this point. smile.gif

And it sounds NOTHING like Disturbed's version; like Todd said once - it's a "reimagining" of the song.

Hey Todd - if you ask me, I'd like to hear a little bit more dynamics in it, as it has some spots in which it kinda floats in the same place. Also, I kinda miss some bending and maybe more vibrato - I'd go for the aggressive kind on this one - but hey, that's just me wink.gif You guys keep working hard and I'm sure it'll turn out great smile.gif

Thanks for giving it a listen!! I'm actually mimicking what the original solo is doing in the first part and yup, it's not very dynamic at all. Then I do a bit of shreddery at the end smile.gif I wanted to keep it similar to the original solo for the most part as it's hugely well known.

It's been a massive learning curve for me. I have mixed and remixed this song numerous times only to realize today (thanks to Todd) that my bass was oversaturated during mixing (because of my subwoofer), so when I'd listen to it in my car, the bass never sounded like it was strong enough - but it was deep and heavy at my computer.

Also, I've had to watch LOTS of videos on recording and mixing, learning tons of stuff I never knew. Another project will go smoother after the trial and error of this one - but I'm very pleased with it overall, there's some dings here and there that I could work through if I had a professional sitting right next to me, but for the sake of this I'll just cover it with distortion.

Another major hurdle for me was the timing of the vocals. We received the vocals as audio files, and to me, they seemed to lag a bit, but it may have just been the vocalists preference on how he wanted to sing the song. So I cut and pasted his vocal pieces into an entirely different tapestry than he presented - hope he likes it and it doesn't piss him off.

Todd called this a dual but I don't see it that way (I know he was kidding). We both had ideas on how to mix, EQ, some things on structure; but regardless - utilizing the same ingredients.

I'm not sure if anyone is familiar with building websites and what the function of CSS is - but, you can make easy changes in a small amount of code that can change the entire look of your website - so I see this project as something like that. How interesting it would be for two people to work together getting parts together - then putting the pieces together the way each likes them best - same puzzle pieces building a different puzzle.

There is no wrong way, there is only the way each individual likes it. So for every unique person there is a unique solution.

I started out thinking this would be a couple of guitar tracks, drums, bass and vocals. At this point this file has 70 tracks on it - closer to 80 if you count the drum channels which require leveling from within EZ Drummer. Some of these tracks would not be necessary if I had automated changes - but I preferred to keep different things on different tracks - for instance if a guitar part uses a phaser, there is a track set up with a phaser on it, etc, etc.

This whole project has been an awesome learning experience. It's been slow, because of things in our real lives, not to mention we do everything through email and drop box - but this song could have been done in few days if we lived around the corner from each other.

BTW - I love the solo!

This clearly seems like a great experience for you and Todd as well, so I am curious of seeing and hearing the final result.

Todd - maybe trying to keep it more aggressive but involving more elements of expression will make it sound 'bigger' and more dynamic so to say?

Been distracted with many things in the past several months and am just getting back to MUSIC it seems!!! Here is the latest mix. Please let me know if you hear anything that needs fixing, tweaking, rethinking, etc. smile.gif
