Hi all,
I'm learning Misfits' "Scream" track this evening, and though it seem fairly easy I'm having some trouble keeping pace with the riffing. Here's the song (warning! can be scary ). The actual riffing starts at 45 secs, and here' my doubt: Is that rhythm played downstroke only? Or up and down?Cause if I play those powerchords up/down then I can keep pace, but if it's downstroke only then I will need to work it much more! -------------------- Guitars:

In my humble opinoion, this is very harldy played with only downstrokes - if my ears (and poor audio quality) dont betray me
Also gengrewise (is that even a word?), I would expect such fast downstroking from Romeo, or Petrucci Not that I think its impossible tho This post has been edited by Jakub Luptovec: Sep 3 2009, 10:00 PM -------------------- my youtube account with riffs and ideas: https://www.youtube.com/user/Phoenygzus

It sounds like downstrokes indeed but still there is heavy compression on overal sound
so it could be mix of downstrokes and AP as well. -------------------- Youtube

Thanks guys, I'll go alternate then, I swear my right arm is so tired after trying to pick those chords downstroke only from the elbow for an hour straight
I'll see what I can do tomorrow -------------------- Guitars:

Definitely altenate pick those powerchords! You can hear the diffrent sound of up and down alternating the same chord clearly while downstroking makes the chord sound always the same (think master of puppets) Just a small digression here, thing with downstrokes is not that much about having same "sound" for every stroke, it's more to have that staccato effect which is very appreciated in heavy genres and naturaly you'll have more staccato if your hand needs to go on same starting position after every stroke. Plus, some less skilled player would make all downstrokes sounding not the same. You mentioned Master Of Puppets which is great example of GREAT downpicking, not everyone is James tho. edit: typo.... as always. Good path to reaching tendontis I say - dont look for song that suits you, make it suit you Wish you good luck bro' Don't even mention it!, "tendonitis" gives me the creeps! AP or mix, that is. Even if the misfits themselves ome knocking down my door telling me it's downstrokes ..which is very appreciated in heavy genres and naturaly you'll have more staccato..... ...Plus, some less skilled player would make all downstrokes sounding not the same. That would be me Thanks guys, what would I do without GMC? Upon a close look on some live footage it seems like the guitarist is using both. There are scenes where he is only downpicking and there are scenes where he is alternating and some others where he switches back and forth... I guess within a punk band the only thing that matters is to get the sound no matter how you play it Thanks for that deep research Zakk Yeah, that's the beauty of punk -------------------- Guitars:

By same sound I meant they sound *more* similiar because it's always the root and then the 5th note you are stricking when downpicking while you can hear a clear diffrence between alternate strokes because you strike the notes of the chord in another order when up-picking. Perhaps in some semi slow riffs, it's quite hard to determine notes order in heavy staccato riffing imo, it's not like chord on acoustic strummed up or down and let it ring so you could hear what note was last in a row, just my opinion. Anyways, we're way off the track, I guess it's all about Punk playing, play as you go. -------------------- Youtube
