Here's something you might not have known. Paul Gilbert wrote the song Viking Kong in the key of A minor so that Yngwie Malmsteen could be a guest soloist on the song. Malmsteen is actually incapable of improvising over anything unless it's in the key of A minor, and as we all know, that in itself can get pretty repetitive. Obviously, if you ever heard the song Viking Kong, it's all Paul. Yngwie didn't own up to the offer, and has denied ever being involved with Paul other than for a photoshoot.

I come to think of it, I have an instructionvideo that he talks about "E phrygian", which definitely is the 5th scale degree of A Aeolian. Pretty funny, huh?

His brain can only think of A minor patterns, now that's what I call lazy biggrin.gif

But he creates great music with it

Can that be true? I'm astonished.

Edit: Quoting is hard.

I don't believe Malmsteen doesn't know any other key except A minor, that doesn't make sense. smile.gif

It means he's having trouble moving the boxes when improvsing. He hasn't bothered to memorize them, that's why I said lazy.

that is so dam funny..lmao, don,t get me wrong i still love alot of yngwie,s tunes but the neo-classical stuff has been done to death...i think emir hot is the new hero on the block, cause i think he has a much better style and more substance, enough with the neo-bull crap, i want to hear a new style of playing, and i think we have a lot of fresh idea,s at guitarmasterclass, so good work everybody!!!!!!

Posted by: David Wallimann Nov 19 2008, 12:08 AM

When Yngwie needs to improvise in C, he tunes his guitar a step and a half higher...
Mouahaha!!!

Hahaha!

Yngwie is still the king of his genre! Even if it is all in A minor!
All though i'm checking through some yngwie tabs i have I do see a C minor lick here.
But yeah pretty much all the same key from what i'm seeing.
He does use Harmonic minor to! But A...hahaha well actually Ab cause he does tune down a semi tone.

great post mate, well said!

I played about 50 Yngwie's songs in full. I can tell you that he can improvise in any possible key on the guitar. The only repetitive thing is the scales and lick he uses. He's got like 10 or 15 of them and that's all but speaking about the key Yngwie knows it all. He tunes his guitar half step down but that's for a totally differnt reason.

Wow Emir 50 full Yngwie tracks, that's crazy!

Thanks for clearing that up:) I only got a book with some licks not songs. The licks (mostly) just happened to be in that key.
See what you're saying about the same licks/sequences though.

It is true his licks are mostly in E or A harmonic minor and Phrygian dominant or diminished over a 5th dominant chord. Take the first album for example and analyse keys in some tracks. In "Far Beyond The Sun" there are 7 different keys but still true that the licks are almost the same.

I'll definately check that out! I'll be at the music store today i'm sure they have the book for that album.

What I ment that he always uses the relative modes, so he doesn't have to move the patterns around.
Was I wrong?

Guess the Amin relatives is just a big preference then, which is prolly what the youtube guy ment too, as everyone are able to move patterns around...

He is a repetitive player but trust me he can play in any key with no problems. Put that youtube guy and Yngwie next to each other, I think the guy will be blown to the space.

Yngwie is quite overweight I think you are right. He could definitely blow any guy into space. The power of his lungs must be incredible biggrin.gif

Emir is better than Yngwie by loads. Emir is a guitar god. Unfortunately I'm not so great. I'm a guitar cod.

Posted by: David Wallimann Nov 19 2008, 03:11 PM

All that being said, I really do respect Yngwie's playing. He really is a great musician.
We all know though that the reason he is so hated by most is because of his nasty ego.
Even thoug I've heard that his amazing playing justifies his ego, I strongly disagree.
Humility should be the number 1 quality in everyone of us...

I AGREE ON 2 THINGS....1: EMIR IS BETTER THAN YNGWIE BECAUSE HE HAS MORE STYLE AND SUBSTANCE...2: I AGREE WITH DAVID JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE GOOD DOES NOT MEEN YOU SHOULD HAVE AN EGO, I HAVE WAY MORE RESPECT FOR A GUITARIST WHO IS HUMBLE!!!

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Nov 19 2008, 08:31 PM

I don't think Yngwie is having an ego because of his playing - I think that's what he is in general. That kind of a person he is. I don't like his music and style not one single bit, but a player of that magnitude can sure play in any key he wants, he's a musician. Learning to improvise in several keys on the guitar is a joke. If you said piano, that can be understandable - maybe. He would bang away the right pattern and that's it. This way he has 15-20 patterns that he can shift in any way he wants.
But this is not too important, since I don't like that stuff anyway. wink.gif smile.gif

Did anyone ever here the audio recording of him in a rage on a flight? I remember back when I had my first guitar lesson, my tutor showed me that. Very funny!

I've seen Yngwie live at the Mean Fiddler in London about 5 years ago I'd guess. He is a talented muscian there is no doubt about that, even if he isn't your prefered taste.

One thing I did notice was he seemed to still be wearing the same leather trousers as he used to back when he wasn't bigger - there was a lot of belly spillage!
