Hi!

I try to stomp with the right foot the 4/4 beat.

Then I try to play a easy lick in a very low speed 60 - 70 bpm.

After a few lick cycles either my foot isnt in time or my playing isnt in time or everything isnt in time -> total chaos wink.gif

Im using the metronom, to help my brain and the foot, but it is very hard

16th
-------------------------
--8-p-5-----8----------
----------5b------------
-------------------------
-------------------------
-------------------------

OR

8th Triplets
---------------------------
--8-p-5--7-p-5------5---
------------------7b------
---------------------------
---------------------------
---------------------------

Is there a trick or special training for the brain ?

Thanks
Frankster

You have to built synapses in your brain in order to work seperate your thinking (beat) with your actual handling (playing) just like you had to gain individual control over your left and right hand when you started to play guitar.

All you need is more time, these things don't happen over night, you have to train your timing with the metronome until it becomes natural to tap the beat with your foot or to count it...

Play slower, either in a slower metronome beat, or with halftime in a faster beat...

While working try to count 8th notes aswell, and try to land the edges (beat notes) of your lick on those beats... Try counting sub-beats in your head like:

8th notes on a 4/4 metronome setup:

[1----and----2----and----3----and----4-----and-----]

(those "and"s must meet the moment your foot is on the "peak" in the air. Like numbers for the actual taps and "and" for the in air stops I'll call them "hops")

and if you are not playing in triplets, every note you play in the lick must land on that actual taps or hops or exactly the mid point between them (if you are playing 16th notes)

Remember if you play in a slower tempo keeping the metronome will be a little harder as the interval between taps gets longer, but if you play halftime in a double tempo, you'll count 8ths so it will be easier...

Hope this was helpful...

Just keep ti slow and try to count everything as precise as you can. Counting is a skill like any other, so the more you do it, the better you will become at it.

That requires practicing, not just foo tapping but also metronom playing.
Just keep on what you were doing, you are on good way!

You have to figure out in which beat of the triplet fits the beat of the time signature so you can keep counting without losing your line. Then, you will just feel it and play it with no problems

The best way to do it is pick out an easy song you know, sing to it with chords and play at the same time. In your head you can hear the tempo because you know how the song goes so you then begin to control the tempo yourself and so you create your own timing as it were rather than letting a metronome control you. Keep trying different songs and your foot will start to automatically begin to respond to keep the timing, even if its 'Old Macdonald had a farm'..

Hi Guys!

Many Thanks!

If you play 8th triplets do you count "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and" in your head ?

Because this is really hard.

My feet stomps the right beat but my head wants to count every triplet stroke wink.gif

To count 16th notes I learnd to count like this
1 e and e 2 e and e 3 e and e 4 e and e

Or

du bi du bi du bi wink.gif

Depends on what kind of triplets and over what kind of bar.
Per example, 8th triplets over 4/4 bar would be like this:
counting bar (with foot) - 1.....2.....3....4....
counting triplets(playing) - 123-123-123-123

You can also try to sign triplets on loud while tapping beats with your foot,
just to be sure that you have got everything under control.

I think the key here is to become firm about the timing. Play to a metronom, make sure you are paying attention to the timing, and at some point you will be able to tap your foot along with your playing automatically, cause you feel the timing. This needs practice, like all the other things too, so keep practicing to a metronom, once your fingers do the job your feet will follow.
