I was learning a song today, and it was going pretty smoothly until I came across this one bar. It is solid 8th note triplets, but with accents every second note, so you have to do the accents off beat.

Attached Image

I've been practicing this as low as my metronome can go (40bpm), I still only get it every second time or so, and the song is at 145bpm. I was wondering if there was a certain way you had to think about it, but everything I tried didn't seem to work.

What I'd like to know is, is there a way you can think about this that will make it a lot easier, or do I have to practice it at 40bpm and gradually increase the speed.

Cheers

Matt

I don't see number 3 in the bracket above these 8th note groupings but it is safe to assume these are in fact 8th note triplets.

Best advice I can give you is to take that same section and instead of playing it as 8th note triplets play it as just 8th notes !
By doing this you will get accent always on the same place. So if you start on down beat and accent is on every other note, you will end up playing accent always on down beats !!! The same thing goes if you start with accent on up beat.
Now what this does is actually teaches your right hand to play accents on perfect spots.
The only trouble (and thats next step) is to actually play correct rhythm with these accents.

Once you nail accents with simple 8th notes, your right hand will remember (finger memory) accents so its just a matter of changing rhythm value from 8th notes to 8th note triplets. Piece of cake !

Let me know how it goes Matt smile.gif

is it a Kiko Loureiro song? He usually use those accents. A good tip is to mark the 8th notes with your foot and play the triplets. Your foot will have the accent you need. Play it slow and once you figure out, speed it up. Hope it helps

Those accents are actually pretty easy to get!!
I believe what confused you the most were accent signs in a first place.
Play it naturally just like you would if there weren't any accents.
As you can see all "accents" are on downstrokes (if you play straight AP of course)
and pretty often we make tiny accents on downstrokes even without thinking,
I'm not saying that Kiko (if it's from his song) did it out of purpose
but imo it might be easiest way to get those accents without too much hassle.
It would be much harder it those were 3nps patterns
but here you have ascending lick in sequenced 3rds and you switch between strings almost
all the time which leads to kind of natural accent every time you
go back to lower note. smile.gif

Also one other thing I forgot to mention that might help.

If you accent every other 8th note in the 8th note triplet figure, accents end up sounding like you are playing quarter note triplets.
Type it in guitar pro , play it back and you will see what I mean.
So this is another way to look at this bar - think of it as quarter note triplets with accents smile.gif

Edit : Typo

Great !
Perhaps you can post a video or audio recording of yourself doing it at 30bpm as well ?

You can post one with your current ability and post new one after you have practiced using methods suggested.

This was my best one out of three takes. My problem atm seems to be I can't keep in time when I do the accents.

I see what you mean...
Even with this examples accents are not loud enough in my opinion.
When you practice accents, practice making them really stick out and be loud and clear. Almost to the point like you want to snap a string !

It seems to be I either get loud accents or I stay roughly in time, not both. I haven't practiced this lick since yesterday though.

Take your time with it. Practice it for couple of days and post a new recording. Keep in mind advices regarding volume of accents !
