GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ New Song And Video Animation

Posted by: Rammikin Oct 11 2018, 05:52 AM

Here's another in my series of songs accompanied by a fractal video animation. My goal here was to make the guitars sound big in the mix. (You have to wait a bit for the guitars to come in). AxeFX amp models used here include Dual Rectifier, SLO100, and JMP-1. Any feedback you could provide about the mix or performance or composition would be appreciated.

P.S. This animation appeared a while back in a collaboration I did with Todd.

I remember that vid! smile.gif That was a fun one. Once I heard the guitars, i realized that they might be a bit fx heavy to be HUGE in the way you are wanting. There are wads of ways to make the guitars stand out in a mix, the easiest way to is to keep the fx as sparse as possible and double the guitar tracks by playing the same part twice and panning them a bit. Some folks record each part four times and pan them 10 and 2 and then the second set farther out. I've tried this and it always seemed like more work than it was worth. Also, even gain/dist can cause guitars to actually seem smaller due to signal compression so either using less or playing the part twice and having one track with less gain be a bit louder can work. There are many ways to skin this particular cat. I'm sure folks will have other ideas smile.gif

Maybe not smile.gif. Besides you and Gabe, there only seems to be a handful of people who are active on the forum anymore.

I am hopeful that once the mobile app finally launches, it will usher in a Golden Era for GMC. Most folks interact with the web with their phones/apps these days. The generation coming up has no interest in desktop/laptop machines when their tablet/phone will do just fine. I read kris mention something about moving toward the mobile app. No idea when this will happen, but I think when it does happen that it will greatly spur participation.

I like the mix as well as the overall timbre, sonic 'feel' and texture of the piece.
My only comment is that I would have liked to have heard a real key change.
It hovers around that C/F axis for a long time. That's just my personal thing though.

*When you go 'minor' at 2:47, maybe drop it down to Bbm or up to Fm for a bit - ?
Again, that's just my thing.
