The Name Sewn Upon My Back
Today Is The Day I Die

Today, Is the day....I die

I look up to a pale moon in a bleak sky
I wonder if I will see her after death
Nomadic clouds slow the passage of time
Only delaying my inevitable end

I wonder if my son will remember me
To young to know his father died
Rain beats upon my fatigued body
Only hiding the tears behind my eyes

And I know today is the day
The day that I will die
Yet for freedom I still fight
Into certain death I march

Know me
By the name sewn upon my back
For my body will not remain
Only the uniform it once fought for
Will ever let you know that I had to die
Know me
By the name sewn upon my back
For my body will not remain
Only an emotional crater is left
In the hearts of my family

Will my daughter ever know
How much I really loved her
Will my family ever know
How much I really miss them

Bless me father If I have sinned
I'm off to walk into war again
Let them know I did this not for me
But I died for my family, My country

SOLO

I look one last time to that pale moon
Still there even in daylight
I look one last time to that bleak sky
As a bullet strikes me....

And I know today is the day
The day that I will die
Yet for freedom I still fight
Into certain death I march

Know me
By the name sewn upon my back
For my body will not remain
Only the uniform it once fought for
Will ever let you know that I had to die
Know me
By the name sewn upon my back
For my body will not remain
Only an emotional crater is left
In the hearts of my family

So I was reading some books on the American Civil War, and I read about how some soldiers, Who knew that when they went into battle, they were dead. Even more sadly, they knew that there bodies would most likely be unable to be recognized by the resulting conflict, They would sew there names on the backs of there uniforms, So there families would know they had died, so they could be buried etc. And its just a depressing thought, But also amazing the bravery those soldiers had, So this song is about a soldier who is thinking about his family before he goes into his final fight, before he dies.

Ahhh ! This is so powerful. smile.gif

Last Verse was good. Concluded things well.

The opening rhyme really helps capture how much sorrow the soldier really has.

Glad to see you alive and kicking on the LB again. biggrin.gif
