GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Guitar Suggestion

Posted by: Deleted Mar 1 2010, 07:36 PM

Hi,
I would like to buy a guitar to play rock, I actually own a squier strato... I'm looking for a better sound. I don't like his tremolo/bridge and I'd prefer a floyd rose.
I've a budget of about 600€, what guitar would you suggest?

Posted by: ZakkWylde Mar 1 2010, 07:44 PM

Do you really want a tremolo? Because you can't just change tunings on a Floyd Rose, it takes a whole new setup to change the tuning!
Also I would vote against a Floyd Rose because for 600$ you won't get a guitar with a Real Floyd Rose (unless you buy a used guitar) and the cheaper liscensed Tremolos don't keep the tuning so well...

Do you have a shape you prefer?

Posted by: Deleted Mar 1 2010, 07:49 PM

It's not really important the tremolo, I don't use because of the problem of the tuning, so if I must have one on my guitar I'd prefer a Floyd Rose.

I was looking to a first REAL guitar, and so I'm collecting some suggestions.

(I like les pauls but they're really expensive for my budget, maybe it will be my third guitar smile.gif )

The get a guitar without a tremolo! No tunig problems, better sustain, better tone - if you don't use the trem then it's best to not have one!

Here are some suggestions (without a trem)

that Fender Deluxe Series Nashville Telecaster looks amazing bro!

If you like les pauls try out vintage v100 they cost around 200 - 300 euros and are really good ..

Posted by: Crazy_Diamond Mar 1 2010, 10:33 PM

I wouldn't buy a guitar with a Floyd Rose either ... As a firts high quality guitar you will probably be messing too much with the tuning and stuff.... Floyd Rose can be such a pain in the @$$ .....

Whats with all the floyd rose hate, there so easy to setup once you learn how. if you want better sustain from a floyd rose there are so many options! such as adding a brass block and adding a tremel-no which can adjust!

i bet i can make a floyd rose guitar with as much if not more sustain than a fixed bridge.

I'm with You in this one Victor, I had several guitars in the old days with Floyd's and I never had any tuning problems. (ofc. it was real Floyd's) They even stayed in tune from one gig to another... And bout the sustain, I dont realize why a fixed bridge should give more sustain? It is as well attached with two screws to the body - eg. the vibration of the strings goes through these - and so is the Floyd....
However, I dont use Floyd's nowadays, because I dont really need to do any divebombs, and they are far too expensive in combination that You have to route the body as well....

I have guitar with Floyd Rose style tremolo. It took me a little effort to learn how to set up and tune properly. It was well worth the effort because now I would never use anything else. I love the Floyd tremolo because my guitar stays in tune and it's easy to tune but I hardly have to touch it. There are lots of videos on youtube that show you how to use Floyd. It takes some practice but once you get it you will never regret it. Some Ibanez guitars in his price range actually come with very good locking trem system like Floyd but its called Edge.

I recommend you look at the Ibanez RG or Ibanez S series guitars because they are great for rock and have decent trem systems that come stock.

If you are looking for a really nice guitar that is not Floyd and is also great for rock.....then check out the Sterling JP50. It has a tremolo but not locking like a floyd. It has humbucker pickups meaning great for rock. It also has locking tuners which should help it stay in tune. I think it is unusual to have a guitar in this price range to come with locking tuners. Here's a link....

sounds like your not totally sure floyd roses and les pauls are poles apart...

I would def go for a les paul, you won't get the same sustain and tone from a thin basswood superstrat as you would from a heavy mahogany glued neck les paul.

you could get an eppy les paul some of them are really nice, if the headstock really bothers you then get luither to make it into a gibson!!!

you could always pimp your strat, change the pick-ups, bridge and tuners. change the logo if it bothers you...

also look into getting a warmoth to ur exact specs... esp as eurp is so strong compared to dollar...

I had a licensed Floyd Rose and it was bad... an original would definitely be better. But in which price range can you get the real thing ???

Fender Deluxe Player strat? Or Lone Star wink.gif I have the same budget, and I tend to go for a PRS SE custom, they now have a 25th anniversary edition, which gives you great quality for your money!

This made me look up the new guitars for PRS this year and I came across the Mikael Akerfeldt PRS SE, very interesting guitar imo, looks amazing too. Something I'd be interested in.

On second thought, the band logo kinda spoils it... dry.gif

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Mar 3 2010, 02:15 AM

I recommend PRS SE guitar for your budget. Not sure if they make them with tremolo tho..

Posted by: Mr T Mar 3 2010, 10:38 AM

You can get both the customs and the singlecuts as a hardtail or with a trem, whichever you prefer.

Posted by: Deleted Mar 6 2010, 08:47 PM

I like the PRS but not SE... How much is the normal PRS?

Posted by: ZakkWylde Mar 6 2010, 08:51 PM

Well a REAL PRS is handmade and should cost arround 3000$

Posted by: Deleted Mar 6 2010, 08:56 PM

mmm, maybe is better not to buy it smile.gif

Posted by: ZakkWylde Mar 6 2010, 08:58 PM

The PRS SE series are good guitars for the money you pay for them. For 600 Euros you could look out for a used Gibson Les Paul Studio!

Posted by: Marc_Maiden Mar 7 2010, 12:44 AM

i have been playing schecter's c1 plus guitar....the one i got was just amazing and the neck and frets were out of this world, and the stock pick ups sound great!

i went to guitar center and tried out the same model, and it played like poop...so id suggest to try the schecter, but make sure to actually try it!

I've just found an Ibanez Jem 555 of a guy who lives next to my town (It has been bought 4 years ago):

http://www2.mercatinomusicale.com/ann/ann.asp?vurl=ibanez-jem-555-steve-vai-signature=id1576490.html&sid=

It's selling it for 550€ and since it has been my favourite guitar after les paul It would be really awesome to get one if it works.
What do you think?

If I go there to see and try the guitar what things should I check out?

Thanks

I got one and i really love it, You should check the Edge,

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic Mar 17 2010, 06:50 PM

That guitar looks cool! You should try it out. Make sure to play it at least 30 minutes to see if its comfortable to you and if everything is in good shape...

Ehm... What's the edge? smile.gif

Posted by: ZakkWylde Mar 17 2010, 07:48 PM

He means the Edge III Tremolo, Ibanez calls their tremolos Edge (edge Pro, Edge Zero, Edge I,II...)

Not to bash your guitar Dennizzz119, but the Jem 555 isn't the best Ibanez guitar out there... It is good but way overpriced for what it delivers because of Steves Vais Name on it - you can get a better Ibanez for the same money!!!

Marc_Maiden can give more input but the Jem 555 is not so great because of the Cheap tremolo (the Edge III isn't the best Ibanez trem), other Ibanez guitars like the Prestige RGs cost the same and are equipped with much better Tremolos. If you want a great Ibanez for your money, look for a used RG Prestige like the 2550 or the 1570!

Posted by: Marc_Maiden Mar 17 2010, 07:56 PM

smile.gif

the jem555 is an RG350mdx ($350 usd guitar) made to look fancy and priced at 2-3x the cost of another rg of the same price smile.gif

Ibanez is releasing a new Jem series in the next month or two which is a high level, prestige quality instrument, but at around $1200 usd.

it will come with normal ibanez pick ups, but will have the jem style body/neck/design.

and will be made in japan.

if you are buying a guitar and spending that much, please buy something from America or Japan, do not waste your time with lower quality instruments....you want this one to last!

I agree with the RG choice, I'm a beginner and own an RG370DX (aprox. $400 US), I find it light, easy to play and it sounds waaaaay better than my equally priced jackson dinky and other guitars in its price range for that matter. Not to mention it has a real ageless look to it, kinda classic, kinda modern but definitely geared towards metal. It has an Edge 2 Tremelo on it which is like a floyd rose and I love it for the effects and tuning stability but I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate tuning it and heaven forbid I tune it down to C tuning. I'm a beginner though maybe with some more experience I'll come to love tuning it but for now it takes me hours..yes, hours(!), to get it in tune but I only have to do this about once every 2 weeks to a month. I have a back up hard tail but if I were to get a new guitar it would be the schecter hellraiser C-1 with floyd rose ($749 US), I would keep the floyd tuned to D and my edge tuned C so that I didn't have to go through the whole tuning process every time I wanted to practice a different band's songs.
