After getting many PMs about ibanez guitars (like is this model good, should i get this one ETC)

i decided the wiki would do well with an ibanez guitar buying guide. hopefully those who know a lot about other brands will create more buying guitars to side with reviews, and brand wikis.

thanks for reading!

An excellent entry Marc. This one gets a 7.

It's actually a pretty useful one too, as there are so many models/numbers for Ibanez guitars that makes it pretty hard to tell which ones are better than others for people who are not used to the brand. (like me! laugh.gif)

I corrected some minor details here and there. Overall great wink.gif

Oh, I forgot to mention: you forgot an important detail there, category!

[[Category:Gear]]

I'll add it for you, in Gear.

Very nice biggrin.gif

Just one question about the serials..
Don't the ones from 1987-1997 have a month in them aswell?

Like your example F90512345 you say 1989 and number 51,2345 of that year
Isn't it 1989, May, number 12345?
(i think thats what you pmed me long ago about my Jem tongue.gif )

Also wanted to point out a little typo: "to buy a used Ibanez instead of used" under Quality.

thanks for correction guys!

Joruus, did not start adding months in their serials till after 1997

that "0" in there was kind of a trick, it just means that instead of it being 500,000 model made, its the 50,000th

obviously it would be easier to leave out the zero, but ibanez does not do that!

and as for the iceman, destroyer, and artcore, they are pretty much the same as the S and RG, they just look different. actually it is hard to find a good quality destroyer or iceman these days. the golden years for these were in the 70's and late 80's. If you have an original paul stanley iceman like my friends father does, you have yourself a $5000 axe and thats in "ok" condition

btw zakk you should probably make a pick up guide!

i think that would go much farther than my ibanez guide haha

then you would never have to type so much in pick ups threads again, direct them to your guide, and if they still have questions then you can answer them

im starting to get the hang of this wiki thing! smile.gif

Next article: i dont know yet biggrin.gif

Nice article Marc, interesting read !!

I have a question about the "Golden Era". You mentioned it already in another post somewhere and i was wondering what changed in 2000 that the quality is going down since then?

its hard to say....one of the biggest mistakes was like all other guitar brands, they moved MOST of their production to indonesia, china, and korea

before 2000, most of production was in japan (with high quality control) and the "low end" models were made in korea (second best quality control)

the highly coveted RG550 was considered a mid level guitar back then, the RG7XX series were like the prestiges.

believe it or not, for 7 years, the S prestige series was made in korea...so you were paying prestige price $1000 USD+, for a guitar with the quality of a $500 guitar...you can see why the older S's are worth more than older RGs.

now there are a lot of new features and stuff that make it a good deal for the price (with new guitars) but unless quality control changes in all the ibanez factories, things will be going down hill. It isnt ibanez as a compny that is doing wrong, its more or less who ever is actually running the factory.

Interesting ... makes sense somehow. Thank you Marc !!

I was just wondering as i bought two new Ibanez guitars in the last years. Of course i see a difference in hardware quality between my RG350 and the SV Prestige. Just could not tell what to have expected more considering the price range each of them come from.

You got me interested now to get a hand on some older models and test them. Thanks again !!
