GMC Forum _ Gabriel Leopardi _ Mad's Picking Madness

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 26 2012, 04:27 PM

Hi Mad!! Welcome to your Gab's Army thread!!

Could you please tell me a bit about you, your musical tastes, influences, strengths and weaknesses? I would need some videos of you playing rhythm and solo guitar, so please post your best material here. If you have some music or ideas of your own, also post them here. Also let me know how you think that I can help you and what are your expectations for our job. You can check the other Army's thread to discover the different modalities of this project.

The principles of our Army are:

+ Improve your technique
+ Make music and solos
+ Have fun
+ Destroy the enemy (hahaha not realy just kidding... )

Hi Gabriel!

Thanks for starting this thread for me smile.gif
I'd like to work on my AP-techniques (mainly). Here is a video of trying to play your ITC class 1
Warmup excercise:

Here's a video showing one of the warmup techniques I usually use:

I'd like to be able to play fast and clean AP up to shred speed (>=170 bpm) tongue.gif
And I think I need a practice plan for that. Do you think it's possible to have a plan that works when I spend half an hour a day?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 27 2012, 03:24 PM

Hi Mad! Good videos! yes, I think that if you work hard those minutes every day you will notice an improvement after some weeks.

Let's start this week with these exercises:

Please check out the 3 links and let me now what you think and if you have any question! smile.gif

Thanks!
Will give ITC Class3 a try and upload something for you soon.
I remember the picking hand basics lesson is already recorded, but can't find it - will do another take though.
Hand Synch is great, practiced it a few month ago for a few weeks but never get the original speed, so let's see where I can get to this week smile.gif

OK, here are my first recordings from the ITC3 for today:

and here is a recording for the picking hand basics:

Hi mad! The youtube video is private so I cannot see it. The other samples sound good. The patterns could sound tighter with the tempo. Also, the idea of these patterns is to also move them along the whole string in A minor. This means that you play 4 repetitions and then you move to the following position. If this is not clear, please join my Vchat later today where I will review the ITC course.

Posted by: mad Dec 28 2012, 09:38 AM

Oh, sorry - corrected that..
Won't be able to join your v-chat today, sorry. But I have the idea, so I'll do another recording. I recognized problems with the pattern when descending with my pinky, so I'll make a slower recording with video, maybe you can catch something where the problem could be..

Marc

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 28 2012, 04:00 PM

The video sounds good! The only comment that I have is that it would be better if you pick the first note öf each beat with a downstroke. The accentuation will be easier to do a more natural than starting with an upstroke. Does this make sense?

Posted by: mad Dec 29 2012, 08:40 PM

Thanks!
Well, regarding the downstroke at the first beat: I play it, but the video isn't that good synchronised, sorry.
I'll upload a take of the patterns asap and a very slow take of hand synch soon!

Posted by: mad Dec 29 2012, 10:24 PM

Here are the 3 Patterns played at 80bpm each:

https://soundcloud.com/mad-gmc/pattern1-80bpm?in=mad-gmc/sets/gabs-army-week1-day1

https://soundcloud.com/mad-gmc/pattern2-80bpm?in=mad-gmc/sets/gabs-army-week1-day1

https://soundcloud.com/mad-gmc/pattern3-80bpm?in=mad-gmc/sets/gabs-army-week1-day1

The third one was the hardest..

Hope that's how you meant it to play smile.gif

Happy New Year mate! smile.gif

Thank you biggrin.gif

Well - to be honest, the last days I spent more than half an hour working on AP-techniques (got some free time). So I do few sessions a day each 30-60mins.. as long as I'm not too tensed while playing it's OK (I think).

Today I was able to speed up even a little bit more without messing up too much (few slips here and there). But when I remember the days before I dreamed to play these simple patterns at that speed biggrin.gif

Here we go..

Pattern 1 @ 125bpm (this one was really like a WOW-effect for me cool.gif tongue.gif )
https://soundcloud.com/mad-gmc/pattern1-125bpm?in=mad-gmc/sets/gabs-army-week1

Pattern2 @ 110bpm
https://soundcloud.com/mad-gmc/pattern2-110bpm?in=mad-gmc/sets/gabs-army-week1

Pattern3 @ 105bpm
https://soundcloud.com/mad-gmc/pattern3-105bpm?in=mad-gmc/sets/gabs-army-week1

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 3 2013, 04:27 AM

This takes also have a WOW effect on me!! This is amazing! Congrats man, keep on working on these ones! smile.gif
I'm so proud mate.

Posted by: mad Jan 3 2013, 09:59 AM

Thanks Gabriel biggrin.gif

I'll try to keep that bpm speed the next days and will practise to play it more clean..
The Hand Synch - lesson is giving me some trouble, especially the opening 3-patterns run over all 6 strings. ATM I play it really sowly with a metronome until the speed gets uncomfortable...
I think it would be a goal to play this lesson by the end of this month..

yes, the problem here is crossing strings. This makes Alternate Picking more difficult off course. Let's incorporate this lesson to your diary training...

I'll do so! I was able to play that opening riff @ 60 bpm yesterday, finally biggrin.gif
And the first 3-string pattern is running at 145bpm quite well now! I'll do a recording for you soon!

Cheers,
Marc

Thank you!

Excellent job mate!! It would be cool to incorporate any other technique to do the same workshop in parallel. What do you think?

Definately!! What technique are you thinking of??

Could you please tell me your favourite guitar players and share here any solo played by you combining techniques?

Posted by: mad Jan 11 2013, 05:11 PM

Actually I like the solo-works by Brent Hints (Mastodon). He often combines slow powerful melodies and fast AP-Runs
Here's my favourite atm (solo starts at 2.50):

And I simply love Buckethead smile.gif

Currently I have no recording of me playing a solo - actually I learn to play Ben's Epic Metal Beginner Solo.
I try to put as much feel into it as he does regarding techniques like vibrato, bending, hammer-ons and pull offs. In fact it does look like a very simple solo - but especially the first 36 seconds are quite difficult for me to play...

As far as i can say - I'd like to combine techniques like legato or sweep within our current schedule. What do you think?

yes! Those are the two techniques that I was thinking about when you said Buckethead! smile.gif

Let's start with this two lessons and let's do the same work as we are doing with the Alternate Picking exercises.

Brilliant biggrin.gif

BUT: As I stated at the beginning of all this here, I need kinda practise-plan - and these are lots of routines, how long do you recommend practising each exercise? I mean, do I have to practise all of them every day?

Well, I think that you are doing a great job with the AP exercises, so start in order, just with the first 4 or 5 exercises (when you feel comfortable or get bored add some other ones). Now, the new exercises/lessons combined with the AP that you are working should be your job for the next 15/20 days. Divide your time in 3 equal parts and practice:

Part 1: Alternate Picking
Part 2: Legato
Part 3: Sweep Picking

Posted by: mad Jan 14 2013, 10:26 PM

OK, that's what I'm going to do.
I've got another AP-Exercise to practise (Cosmins recommendation smile.gif )

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/alternate-workout/

I practise that quite slow atm (70bpm max) additionally to the ex. from your ITC..

Posted by: mad Jan 15 2013, 10:21 AM

Here is my first recording for legato (if I go faster by now, it's starting to sound more sloppy)

https://soundcloud.com/mad-gmc/legatoday1-80bpm-1?in=mad-gmc/sets/gabs-army

I just took the first two patterns of Bens lesson.
