GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Reality Of Being A Guitar Player

Posted by: Alex Feather Oct 21 2012, 09:57 PM

Hi guys I wanted to share a story with you that happened today I got a call from a manager of a very big band so they want to hire me but there is a catch I have until march to get 6 pack, retouch my tats and get a new haircut smile.gif
This would be probably the biggest gig in my career yet but it's a lot of work in a short period of time I will do my best to pull it off:) they don't even want me to learn songs or do an audition!
It's not news for me but being a good guitar player is not enough what you guys think about the situation and what would you do?

Posted by: BedroomBozo Oct 22 2012, 07:44 AM

That's... interesting. You have to get a 6-pack? What is it? A boy band?

Posted by: tonymiro Oct 22 2012, 09:19 AM

Afraid the reality of the music industry is that there is an obsession with visual image/looks just like you say Alex.

It even extends to us engineers. I know one who lost work because the 'talent' thought he looked to old. The engineer has thirty years professional experience.

You see a lot of photos of engineers sitting in front of big analogue consoles/desks in a studio. If you check though some of those engineers don't actually own the equpment or work in the studio in the photo. They do it becuase people want to see us infront of equipment that looks impressive.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Oct 22 2012, 11:57 AM

Alex, my 2 cents on this - getting a 6 pack will never ever harm you in any way, but it's something which YOU have to do because you are convinced you want it, not because some big hiney producer/ manager wants it smile.gif I for one am working on my 6 pack because I WANT that. If this contract would make a big change in your life AND if you won't forget your principles in life, go for it. But if you have alternatives, never go for what's contrary to what you have believed and felt so far.

Posted by: Ben Higgins Oct 22 2012, 12:49 PM

I say go for it, Alex. If it's going to give you something that is putting you where you want to be in life then don't let a few extra tasks get in your way. That's only if you want to do it, of course !

As for abs, it's always good to remember that we already have abs.. we don't gain abs. They just become visible when we lose the extra baggage around it. I haven't ever seen mine yet but maybe one day ! tongue.gif

If it was what I wanted, I would do whatever it takes.

If I was offered a job, that required a six pack, that would be a great motivation to work out. I don't see my abs either.

I don't know about the other things. I don't think I would get a tattoo to join (I don't have any).

What kind of hair cut do you need?

Yeah, good question ! smile.gif

I can't imagine ever joining a band that require my hair to be shorter ! laugh.gif

Hey mate, this sound like good new for me. It's a truth that image is very important in the music industry, every music style has its stereotypes so this sounds normal to me.

I would go for it mate!! I'm curious to know which band you are talking about! smile.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Oct 22 2012, 05:31 PM

It sure sounds weird and I'd really like to know what kind of band it is. But I'd also say go for it. I might join you when it comes to the six pack thingy laugh.gif

What exactly does "retouch your tats" mean? Do you have to laser them off? Or redo them so they look like new?

So it's Steel Panther?

Posted by: BedroomBozo Oct 23 2012, 01:24 AM

Man, when I started playing in the early 90's it would have been the opposite! You would have been coerced into looking uglier and definitely would not want to have a 6 pack. Even if you did have one it would be covered in baggy sweaters and flannel ph34r.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Oct 23 2012, 06:55 AM

Haha! Guys! You won't believe this! I dreamed that Alex showed us a list of songs that band had, in order for us to guess the band. The first one was 'Chop Suey' - So I guess we all know what band plays that song and it would be NOTHING SHORT OF AMAZING if it were that band biggrin.gif

Get yourself a good Personal Trainer and even more important a nutritionist, get one involved and with a good track record in the body building scene. With this much time, they can build some muscle and get your bodyfat down to show abs easily

Yeah I would second this.. having someone to guide and motivate you will be a massive help smile.gif

And guys, I really doubt that the band involved is a traditional metal band.. they just wouldn't deal in this kind of way. Or at least I'd hope..

If it's a band you like then go for it. But one thing I'd point out is that if you do get yourself a six pack it's not easy to maintain it, trust me I've done it a few times. It's not like you're cutting weight for as fight or an important event where you can let yourself go after if it's a bands image then I take it that it's going to have to be constant. That means a whole change of lifestyle a lot of work in the gym and a lot of eating boring food. Chicken and rice can get tedious quickly laugh.gif

I have no idea Alex. I just had a look right now... Honestly, I am not a big fan of all these marketing boosted things. I can't say they are not working, as I haven't tried them, but somehow they seem fishy to me.

I have paused my fitness training for about 3 months now as I had to work more to get my own fitness devices and raise money for the Aria album/ music video and release. But I am honestly a little scared as I have lost about 3-4 kilos, which I intend to put back on myself and maybe come up to 85 kilos. Now I have 77-78..

My recipe is the following: 8 hrs of sleep, eating what I want but not exaggerating with sweets (the only thing which is not 'health food' in my diet) walking wherever I go about 80% of the time, 4 fitness workouts a week combined with the Ken Jutsu training and soon Zen Meditation early in the morning. It sounds like a lot, but all you need is a little discipline and it's not that hard. I'd say that the training (fitness and Ken Jutsu) would only take up about 1h and 30 minutes of my time 4 days a week while there are two ken Jutsu training sessions at the dojo which need 1h30min each. So I guess 1h30 min almost daily, but trust me I am thanking myself for taking the time to do it.

I will start functional training, which is tiresome and it involves a lot of body weight exercises, but it'll also workout your inner body as well out of what I understood.

My conclusion would be to find a good personal trainer and work with him close at hand - he should tell you what to eat and how to workout in order to obtain the desired results smile.gif

Yes. I concur. Don't mess around with second hand info of the 'net or anything. Go straight to someone who knows what he's doing and can monitor your progress with you and get rid of any habits that may set you back. smile.gif

Hell, C-Man you've got quite an admirable schedule.. nice one ! biggrin.gif

I haven't done any exercise for ages and I feel guilty but I've been concentrating on guitar related things and improving my mind !

I agree, they're there for a reason.. no matter the integrity of the creator when setting it up, their first and foremost goal is to make money.. whereas a personal trainer has to produce good results or they get no business. Especially if they're an independent personal trainer, not just someone going through the motions at some gym they work at.

I also find that when I'm surrounded by other people giving it some, I push myself a lot harder than I thought I was capable of. Energy is infectious and nobody wants to be 'the slacker' ! smile.gif

That's life in the big city eh? Got to to look the part to fit the "Packaging" right? But the good news is, you'll end up looking great! So take plenty of press pix and what not so that once off the road and back to regular eating/living, you can have some killer pix for the demo/press pack. Assuming of course you can get a ripping six pack abs set in that short of time. God knows I couldn't.

Branding is a B**TCH but hey, whattya gonna do eh? When Nightwish replaced Tarja, they tarted up the new gal to look just like her, died her hair and everything. When Ben Moody formed a band after Evanescence, he ended up hiring a singer gal that they tarted up just like Amy Lee. I"m sure if I got called to join TYR ( yeah right) they'd want me to get hair extensions and get on steroids. smile.gif

Well that's the thing! I have been thinking a lot about the whole situation and I get it! It's like you are coming to a restaurant and if their food pictures are all nasty you will not eat there you will go somewhere else! If you are playing with celebrities you have to look 150% so when people see you they like "Man I want to look like this dude!"

Well, that's one way of putting it, but when you join a team you also have to follow the rules so it would only be fair to do things this way. If you decide you want in, of course!

That's why it is a reality of being a hired gun! The sad part is that there is so many talented musicians that sit without work because of stupid rules!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Oct 26 2012, 07:49 AM

I know man, this is one of the reasons why I feel happy for not having to rely on anybody else than myself to make money out of music. In here the great compromise done by musicians is to perform in cover bands and totally obliterate their musical personalities. I have A LOT of friends being tremendous musicians, but not having written anything worth noticing just because they didn't give themselves enough time to finish a product in its entirety. Too bad..

Alex if I may;
This is something you may approach peacefully and quietly, your best is all you ever have and you have no less, it is enough. There is no catch, time is neither short nor long, it is what it is. The hair and tats piece of cake. If your 6 pack needs diet and effort then do so. Do not falter or hesitate, envision success now and apply your self with consistent focus and meaning now. Follow your plan, you do know (intuition) what to do! Don't worry about being positive, do not worry at all. Think of it as being So. Have Faith. Relax, enjoy, succeed!

I am very excited for you, be well

Very well spotted man! biggrin.gif I owe me getting into fitness to a girl I've never been with. Yes, yes, silly high school story where this little 9th grader here went crazy after this girl who wanted him to get in shape. he did it, but he stayed with the shape. laugh.gif

Cool ! Have you found or approached anyone to help you with training & nutrition yet ? It's just that they will help you create something that is consistent and leads to weight loss that you can sustain. Some shock diets will give an initial weight loss but will be hard to maintain.

Well done and good luck ! smile.gif

Anyway, running a few kilometers every day can do miracles, and you can do it everywhere.

Posted by: llibach Nov 1 2012, 09:50 PM

If your on the road you need to learn to skip, a rope takes up no space and you only need a few square feet to do it. 20 munites as soon as you wake up will make a lot of difference, ( empty stomach so you'll burn your fat stores).

Posted by: SirJamsalot Nov 1 2012, 11:08 PM

Morning - eat like a King (but healthy food)
Lunch - eat like a cheap prince
Dinner - eat like a poor person (but healty!), and at least 3 hours before you go to bed.

Don't eat more calories than you burn!
And don't go on a survivor diet... nothing worse than having all that skin hang loose off your bod biggrin.gif

Good luck!

Posted by: derper Nov 2 2012, 12:49 AM

NOOOOO!! The tuna diet has alarmingly high levels of mercury, which are "no bueno" for your brain. I would seriously advise you not to eat tuna more than once a week.

I think one of the keys of losing weight is to lose fat without losing muscle, and extreme diets can take off as much muscle as fat. Which might be especially important to keep in this case. This might be where a professional would come in really handy. Someone who can design a diet and exercise routine to fit your goals best, even while traveling. You wouldn't know it to look at me but at one point I was into weight lifting and read a lot of articles on nutrition and powerlifting. www.elitefts.com and www.tnation.com are a couple sites that have good articles and advice and some of those guys do diet consultions, Like Shelby Starnes. He has gotten some people in some really sick shape really fast! Good luck with it!

I totally agree with this. I'm still teaching myself how to use the rope.. before you can really start reaping the full benefits you got to spend time just learning the co ordination but man, does it make the heart pump !

And not to mention wakes up your calf muscles !! tongue.gif

The old fashioned skipping ropes will be ok but they won't move through the air as efficiently so you won't be able to get the same speeds happening. Plastic speed rope is really light smile.gif

About that... last evening, I was all by myself and getting ready to go to bed when suddenly, my phone went bonkers and an alarm started. Needless to say I jumped 1 foot high before realizing I had forgotten the alarm on at a silly hour! laugh.gif

Posted by: Ulrik Nov 4 2012, 08:16 PM

To loose the most, you got to work your big muscles, arms and especially legs.

I want to loose around 5 kilos and just rowed on a machine 10 kilometers, and then I wanted to do so heavier stuff, with my own bodyweight.
But man those blisters in my hands killed the exercise, and I stopped after 3 minutes.

So If you go rowing far, first get some gloves or something biggrin.gif

the place near me charge by the hour so it doesnt really matter if its a new tat or a cover-up etc. Last time I was in ( about a year ago ) it was between £80 - £100 english pounds per hour.

As Leon Russel once sang, "Welcome to Hollywood, say, brother can you spare a quarter?"

It's tough figuring out where to draw lines but if you're a little hungry, maybe bending with the wind isn't too bad an idea. After all, you'll have fresh ink, a handsome new physique (stay away from the steroids, though; attacking the lead singer in a 'roid rage might not be a good career move biggrin.gif ), and, well, hair grows back. (Until it doesn't anyhow. Get old like me [or just have the right/wrong genes] and you'll be dreaming of the days when you weren't buzzing it down to make it look a little less balding.)

That said, only you can decide how much bending is too much. But, you know, if you were a stage or film actor, you wouldn't think twice, right?
