My guess is once they start rioting. Also to keep in mind, even if a shutdown stops the next day for those who lost their jobs may take weeks to get it back.

Mertay is right per usual. Riots in the streets and a brutal crack down may start causing serious problems. People are being told to stay put here til the end of the month. wads of folks don't have enough money to buy food for an entire month without working. Stimulus checks are weeks away and people are already late on rent. You can almost feel the pressure building. If we just open back up, our infection rate will skyrocket. It will take a LOT of deaths from economic woes to equal what will happen if we just tell people to start going back to regular life imho.

Many police departments have said they will most likely not answer non-violent "crimes ", which means people will have to defend themselves ,which is why Californians are flocking to buy guns , but due to the gun laws they voted for they have to wait two weeks ..so I just wonder how far we are from that

Here is president trump talking about the National Emergency and some powers it gives him. He can do anything he deems fit including declare Martial law.

Sadly during times of national emergency the govt can pretty much take a free hand to do just about whatever they want. It's doesn't make it right. But, it is what it is. The people are under the authority of the states, and the states are under the authority of the federal govt. That's just how our system works. There are various bits of legislation that can be enacted by the Prez, by FEMA, etc. that can let them do whatever they think they need to do.

once the death toll from the stay at home order hits 10,000 people, I guess that's the point it will be worse. But only briefly as cases of covid are doubling in this country every 5 days. So 5 days from now, 50,000 people would have to die from the stay at home order. 5 days from that 100,000 would have to die as a result of the stay at home order. I don't think we will see that many people getting dead from just staying home watching tv.

During a national emergency, even the constitution can be temporarily ignored for the sake of "national security" which bypasses every single law on the books. of course we could see a backlash if they go to far, but so far they haven't really done enough to cause a civil revolt.

Here is a good law article about executive power during crisis. I came across it first when i was "pre-law' many years ago in college.

Agreed smile.gif Sadly, in times of crisis, the govt both local and federal can claim sweeping powers. All people can do is obey or resist with violent force which leads to an escalation and usually dead civilians. It doesn't make it right of course. It just is what it is. The govt will do whatever they think they have to do. We sorta have to make the best of it, or join an armed militia.

There are several well armed Militia here in the South as I'm sure you know. They barely tolerate the federal and local government so I do expect some sort of clash at some point as this gets worse. I just hope it's not people getting shot over toilet paper and ventilators.
