GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Post Pics Of Your Gear!

Posted by: Owen Jun 24 2007, 06:59 PM

Ok so as the title says! laugh.gif

I'll start, heres my Unknown branded telecaster, bought it for £160 a year back:

Sanded it down from a horrible orange colour to just the natural grain myself.

My £15 (Cheap as chips) Jim Deacon bass - not bad for that price considering its made of alder and maple:

My Applause Ovation style copy £160 :

My Line 6 Flextone II £200 and Audio Technica Mic £60:

Apologies for the bad photographs but my camera sucks! tongue.gif

So post your gear!

My gear is over here: http://www.pavel-music.info/gear.php

Here are my beauts...

Here's a G&L Climax of mine. It's an HSS setup and they're pretty hot! Couldn't tell ya who made the pickups, but surely G&L standard. Licensed gotoh floyd rose.

Now G&L has always made my favorite kind of guitar (I'm a fender guy, and I like how G&L's are basically strats with hotter pickups and designs, while still keeping that strat rounded neck)

and since we are on the subject of G&L...

Although a bass, this one deserves a little spotlight tongue.gif . It's a 1980 G&L L-1000, and its number 122 off the factory line. My dad took it down to the local music shop years ago just to hangout and show off a bit, and the owner of the shop thought that it was probably signed by Leo Fender under the neck, since it was of the first 150! Sure enough, they parted off the neck and from about the 17th fret to the 21st, Leo Fender had signed it biggrin.gif. The owner made him what seemed a very nice offer on it because of this, but my dad kept it and has left it to me! Very proud of this one.

Here is a standard HSS Mexican strat. This is the axe I practice with mostly, and it plays awesome. I really see no need to ever invest in an American Strat as these Mexican strats play great, and are of good quality.

My dad's 1973 strat copy. This thing is a road warrior with a huge history I can briefly touch on. Dad bought this when he was about 15 years old, as he couldn't afford an authentic Fender strat. I often hear the stories of how this was one of his guitars that actually made him money in gigs, so it's definitely a great memory of his. As you can see, pickguard is electrical taped to cover a huge gap, and it sports Carvin singles. The action is really low on this one, and it SMOKES! This is probably my favorite guitar to play; I feel as if I'm following in my dad's footsteps with it, and I believe it is this that makes this strat copy my favorite over other $1000 dollar guitars smile.gif .

So...let's see YOUR axe!

Here's a pic of my gear (I think I might have posted these somewhere else on this site, sorry if that's a "bad thing"):

My Maton MS2000 DLX, which I only recently acquired is easily the best guitar I've had the opportunity to play. Extremely flexible in terms of sound, with coil tap on both pickups. Of course, flexibility can be a nuisance sometimes, when you fiddle around for an hour just trying to find the right sound.

You can also see there my first "serious" guitar, a Fender Highway One that I picked up after learning my first couple of full songs. It was kind of a goal for me, to play my way through a few songs that others would recognise and like without prompting, which I rewarded with permission to buy something half decent to replace my el-cheapo SX strat ripoff. Of course, given the crazy prices you pay for a guitar in Australia I couldn't justify buying a higher-end Fender.

I'm building up a collection of amplifiers there too, with the horrible SX piece of junk that came with my first guitar, the unpleasant (but not horrible) Fender Frontman 25R which I plan on taking in for a big warranty claim next weekend (it sounded crap from day 1, with lots of buzzing and sound issues on the clean channel). It almost seems unfair to talk about the Roland Cube 60 in the same paragraph as the other two, as I love my Roland. For anybody who practices at home a lot, but wants a good amp for those weekends when the missus isn't home, I couldn't recommend anything else.

Another close-up of the extremely nice finish of the Maton. Purty....

There's a Fender steel-string accoustic not shown that gets pulled out once in a while too. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the Line 6 Pod Live XT sitting on the floor. Really good, very handy at times, but doesn't see a whole lot of use. One of those early impulse eBay buys that I could probably have skipped. In retrospect, I think I was hoping it would cancel out some of the shortfalls of the Fender amp that I hate so much.

Posted by: bmh1109 Jun 26 2007, 05:58 AM

This is the new Ibanez 2570E I just got about a week ago. So far I love it, and it plays like a dream.
The amp is a 1984 Carvin X-60 all tube 60watt 12" with celestion speaker with a cheap Zoom 505II pedal.

Yep they are a division of Gibson now. I enjoy it except for the Quadrail pickups. The sound is very muddy so I might change them out soon.

I have an ibanez gio grx20 that I just recently upgraded to grover tuners and decided to put on some nicer knobs. Much nicer than the standard plastic black ones with white text.
Also added an extra spring to the trem because I run 11 - .49's and they were pulling it up a bit. Love the guitar and since the only problem I've ever had with it, and that I've ever heard of it having was staying in tune, I think I'll be keeping it for a long time because I've just fixed that with the grovers smile.gif

also have a vox valvetronix tube amp (15w) Models 11 different amps, and has 11 built in effects. absolutely awesome tone. fantastic low end, and more than enough oomph to piss off the neighbours for those of us stuck in our bedrooms. I may be doing a review on it because at 210$ canadian it's a steal. nothing else in it's pricerange can beat it. (no pictures yet)

The colour is kindof interesting. it's "jewel blue" but in most lights it purple, and sometimes a really vivid blue. thinking of refinishing it though, after I get some pickups that is.

if you want to keep the finish nice, get some dunlop guitar polish. a little goes a long way, and it'll keep it looking shiny!

sorry to hear about the dent though sad.gif but it's bound to happen may as well get it over sooner than later!

Hey TonyM - is that a Rode NT1-A you are miking your cab with ? I have ne of those, would be interested to know how good it is for miking like that ...

I also just bought a K2- now that is an amazing mic smile.gif

Posted by: tonymiro Jul 20 2007, 04:50 PM

Hi Andrew and well spotted yes its a Rode NT1A. Only other mics I have a dynamic so the Rode gives me a different overall characteristic. I find it slightly less harsh at frequency extremes than the shure sm58 but also more picky about where it's sited and isolated.

I found that it needs to sit slightly off axis and, for me, about 1 metre back from the speakers - too close and it gets mushy wiht a bit of sibliance dry.gif . It's also picky about the direction of the cardioid - gold spot on the mic casing faces speaker for me. Other way round volume and frequency range drop. Both of them together fattens up the sound into my desk nicely.

Let us know more about the K2 - i'm considering getting a new mic so I'd be v interested smile.gif .

Cheers,
Tony

All I can say is that it is amazing smile.gif

I was stunned by the step up from a reasonable dynamic mike (SM58) to the NT1-A, and expected that due to diminishing rteurns there wouldn't be as big a difference between the NT1-A and the K2, but man I was wrong!

I think a big part of it is the fact that it has an omni parttern rather than cardoid - cardoid mikes use baffles to direct the airflow and get the desired response pattern, and I think that makes the sound a little ... restricted (hard to explain until you have heard the K2). The K2 has a wonderful open, unrestricted clarity to it that the NT1A just can't match, in part due to the omni pattern but also I think the valve circuitry does make a difference. The K2 is the first mic I ever recorded myself singing with that didn't make me wince when I played it back wink.gif

Works great on vocals and on Acoustic guitar if you take the time to find the sweet spot - never tried it for miking an Amp though.

This is my grandfather's guitar which is currently my acoustic smile.gif He's loaning it to me since he doesn't play it at all. I'm taking it to a guitar shop tomorrow or Monday to see what kind of refurbishing I should put in to it. It's a 1950 Gibson J-45. I was able to play the low E-string on it and it sounded amazing. I can't wait until I get it fixed up and restrung smile.gif

I'm moving into making my own gear these days, I'm trying to get serious with my playing by practicing to the metronome etc, but I also want to know my equiptment inside and out, so what better way than to build it yourself? There's quite a bit of info out there on the net for anyone else looking to do the same thing.

Heres the amp I finished about a year back

I'm currently waiting on my warmoth guitar parts to come so I can assemble and set up my own guitar. I currently play a usa strat, and I've always liked strats but I want something that sounds a bit warmer than the guitar I currently have, so I've gone for black korina body and mahogany neck, cbs style headstock and all natural finish with gold hardware and a couple of gibson '57 classic pups. can't wait biggrin.gif

Yep, it's a tube amp, it's a copy of a marshall baby bluesbreaker. One of the best places to start would probably be www.18watt.com as they have some good verified tube amp designs there and it's full of friendly folk who'll help you out.

If your interested in making stompboxes then diystompboxes.com is a great site, they have a forum where pretty much every question you can think of has been answered. Also check out generalguitargadgets.com they have a lot of schematics and info on making stompboxes.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Kustom-Quad-100DFX-Guitar-Combo-with-Digital-Effects?sku=481246

This is the Kustom amp I got. I bought it off guitar center for used for half a price ($249 usd) which is a great deal considering on how good this amp sounds when you run through your pedals. Personally, the gain is for more classic rock and blues, nothing harder. Its a more mid range kinda amp but it sounds warm like a tube. I heard it the clean breakes past half way which I could care less considering the fact that you dont have to bring it half way because it sounds loud enough in 2. I love it, deffinitley a hell of a buy considering on how much I paid for it. Plus it has Celestion 65's speakers which really sings. The only effects I use is the delay and reverbs the rest I are ok.

The only thing I could really complain about is that it doesnt come with a foot switch even when its new so think about that. I dont need it personally since all my effects run on clean but you decide. Try it out man, I love the tones in this amp. Heavy as hell though, running bout 58 pounds. No wheels too but me and my dad are thinking of putting some wheels on the buttom.

The Metal Muff is a great pedal. Its very versatile. Im using it on a Satch song atm called Ten Words. Its also deep enough to play any metal genre you can think of. I reviewed this pedal on gear review. Look on the last page.

Yes that FAB pavel is a really cheap overdrive pedal. Its good when you want to dirty up the sound on your distortion ala Hendrix. On its own, it sounds terrible but for $20 you cant go wrong.

True.

If you don't know what you're doing, a steady hand and lots of light will help a lot. Actually, if you have enough light, the hand stability isn't as much of an issue than if it was darker.

If your photo comes out too bright, it's easy to darken it down later. It's hard to brighten a too-dark photo without making it look like crap. If you want mood lighting, you need to be real careful and know what your camera is capable of which is difficult without an expensive digital (or a not-so-expensive film) camera.

I could ramble on about this for a while so I'll stop now. I'd consider myself a photographer even though I've been slacking off the last couple of years trying to decide to stick with film or go digital.

Posted by: GrowingDown1 Oct 11 2007, 01:12 AM

Yeah I know what you mean Vivers. The EMG's are perfect for metal. I mean the high gain is just awesome and sonically they just rip. I think thats why metal players like them so much. When I bought that guitar back in 2001 I was playing a lot of metal so it kind of fit what I was doing. Although I still love this guitar (and play it daily) I prefer to use my PRS Custom 22 on a lot of the newer stuff Im doing. The Dragon II pickups in the PRS have a more bassy, almost creamy sound.

Thanks Pacman. When I bought that guitar back in 2001 I was actually in the Army and on deployment in Kosovo so when I ordered it I had never actually played it or seen it up close., except for in pictures (I know, I took a big chance). When I finally got it I was blown away by how much more beautiful it was in person. I also loved the high gain of the EMG 81's it came with. It took a bit of time to get used to the smaller neck but when I did I just fell in love with the guitar completely. I still play it daily.

Dude that Strat is beautiful. Im speechless.
