Would it be better just to learn and play songs that have technics in them such as legato and sweep picking and so on, to playing exercises?

When i switch from sweeping down to up, my thumb and index finger move, is this ok? Or does all movement have to come from the wrist?

I have seen yngwie and other guitar gods put there small finger under the fretboard, when playing with there first 3 fingers. I am having a hard time doing this, anyone now a good way to do it?
