Try Guthrie Govan for a change.
THAT guy plays almost everything,
which I can't say for JP,my opinion, not the end of the world tho.
Keep looking for different styles, techniques and ways of expression,
that's probably the only right way for every musician.
Meh, I used to be into guitar-oriented music like Govan, Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, Jason Becker, etc. Ever since progressive came on though, guitar-oriented songs just don't seem to hold my attention for too long. Now when I listen to music it is more of like a whole band view for me. The lyrical content plays a big role sometimes. And the only instrumentals I can seem to get into just happen to be Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment because theirs are quite stretched out with guitar solos/keyboard solos, progressive riffing, bass solos, etc. Not just guitar-based themes and a guitar solo.
Even though it seems like I am a DT elitist, I am not, because for example, I wouldn't even buy John Petrucci's solo album. Why? I like his band better. I have tried listening to literally everything else and it is like Deeproots said, nothing seems to reach the bar that I feel Dream Theater has with music and just don't cut it for me. I think the only way to get over them is listen until it just gets old.
