There are a MILLION folks who will tell you they have the secret to teaching you how to play like a god in 3 short weeks etc. sadly, as we all know, that’s pure bunk. Here is the master himself, Mr. John Petrucci walking you through how he does things.
LINK TO ALL TABLATURE IN THIS LESSON https://www.guitarworld.com/lessons/the-joh...i-guitar-method 1.)He is showing just one shape of a given scale. He explains that he would do this same thing for each shape in a given scale all the way up the neck. Play each shape all the way up and all the way down and pick each note, not skipping any of them, no hammer ons, and yes he’s going to use a metronome to make sure he doesn’t do it sloppy. Sure, this is just one man and one approach, But, it’s a solid as heck approach from a man who really knows his stuff. 2.)Put it to Music. He mentions that, to learn a bit of scale fun, he would work it in to some sort of musical bit. As our own KEN did often in my QUICK LICKS series. He would take a lick and turn it in to something more like a short Etude. This helps the brain work on a given scale/lick by re enforcing it with actual music, making it easier to remember. So next time you learn a new scale, try to make a bit of musical something with that scale. Doesn’t matter what, just something. The process itself is part of the education. 3.)Create Triads (groups of three notes) using the notes from the scale shape you are working on. Just pick one note per string and try to create a good sounding triad. Hopefully one without any notes that just don’t seem to go with it. Trust your ear for this. Do this method on each string as you go up. 4.)Add to it. Add, say, a 7th, then go down two notes for a triple feel and play the entire triad with this tacked on. It results in some complex sounding bits. But for each one they tell you FIGURE XXX which you can see at the link referenced above. 5.)At 10:50, he plays something straight out of quicklicks and bootcamp. If you’ve done this with me, you will probably recognize it. It’s a great way to run any scale shape and I suggest running every scale shape you know, using this method. It’s a simple repetition on one string before going to another and makes it sound like you are playing way more notes than are actually being played. 6.)All these patterns work in reverse as well. The key is playing one note at a time, keeping the hands in perfect synch and striking each note that is played. This is foundational playing. Once you get this style of play, then it’s time to add hammer ons, pulls, etc. But, it’s really important to be able to actually strike each note in a given scale and keep it even in terms of striking and in terms of speed, thus the metronome. I've never been a big fan of his playing, I just don't connect with it. *ducking for cover* But breaking things down like this is really useful.
