Mr Vai has created a new techique he calls "JOINT SHIFTING". It's about finger independence and bending to pitch. Sounds simple eh? Watch this vid and give this a shot. If you can do it, please do share a video!!

QUESTION: Can you do this techhnique?

I've tried this and I must admit that it's very painful! laugh.gif

I find even more interesting the fact that Vai's new song is clean and fingerpicked.

I thought it was just me smile.gif I found the technique to be painful as well. I could not find a way to play it that didn't create discomfort and make it feel like my carpal tunnel syndrome was on the way back. I thought it was cool, and sounded unique, but I don't think I could integrate it in to my style. I am impressed that Vai can do it so much without pain on his face.

I remember noticing that despite not reading anything about it (shared that video on a guitar related topic here at the time).

It felt natural to me cause its actually a very Vai style move musically, all the way back to his first album. I mean, in a 1 onte in a raw basis he musically does that quite often with the vibrato.

And yeah it looks painful to practice, I'll pass biggrin.gif

I wish it wasn't as uncomfy to play. Maybe it gets better over time as Vai has no problem at all with it. It does sound cool!

This is the same as country guitarists emulating pedal steel chordal bends. Its hardly new unless I'm missing something.

In vais technique, he's doing it inside of a chordal structure. I think you may be talking about MICHAEL LEE FIRKINS? If not please do add a youtube vid or something. FIRKINS does it more often in lead passages using the whammy bar to make it sound more like a pedal steel instrument.

Vai has definitely added his own thing to it but yeah, the country pickers have been doing it since the late 50s in varying degrees.
Check out Ray Flacke. A lot of oblique bending going on ...

And some others ...

Not being that familiar with the genre I really didn't know that these guys were doing stuff that was this similar to Vai's technique. It does seem like vai drew a LOT from what these guys were doing to come up with his approach. In the "Rock World" I've certainly not seen many folks pull this kind thing off, not that I'm aware of anyway. But as they say, there's nothing new under the sun. Everything is some sort of interpretation of something that's come before smile.gif

I highly recommend you watch the full performance of this guy, Arlen Roth, showing what's possible with just a guitar, an amp, one's hands and some imagination ...

Country pickers are the best in the business. Always have been.
