This is a great video that talks about how you can change the tone your getting just by playing lighter or digging in depending on what you want to hear for a given part of a song. They talk about finding the sweet spot on an amp and same applies to a good sim. Just before the "breakup" or where things distort. This way you can play nearly clean and somewhat dirty/distorted, in the same phrase just by changing how hard you are striking the strings. Good muting is key here as well..It's the mark of a great player to be able to use "Touch Dynamics"
