Pickup Question...

I need some pickup advice.

An Ibanez GRG170DX....I THINK it has a double-coil pickup closest to the neck, one single-coil pickup, and another double-coil pickup...and the pickup selector has 5 different switches...and the switch on the pickup closest to the bridge is going out...it's shorting...

I need to know what I need to do to fix this, or to get new pickups to customise the tone or the combinations of pickups or whatever, can someone school me on this?

Thanks.

Well there are several options. First it is completely different thing to repair the ones you have and to buy new ones. If you are not satisfied with your sound now you can always buy some nice dimarzios or seymor duncans.

I would first check out the wires inside, maybe you just got some interuption in the circuit and need some resoldering.

It would be nice to get some new ones, but I dunno which pickups make which sounds...I always have heard Seymour Duncan and DiMarzios were the way to go, but can you mix and match (like a Dimebucker and a Zakk Wylde EMG) or am I thinking of something totally different?

I'd say that too. I'd bet to 99% it's a loose wire.

Check first the cables to the switch. Try switch position 4 and 5, is it only the 5'th that's shorting. Or do you get single coil sound on position 4 also?
Position 4 sould be both bridge pu and mid pu connected, you can maye hear if it's sounding the same as position 3?

You can mix and match. I know the EMG81 and EMG85 (Zakk Wylde) are active pickups, need a battery and you'd have to change into ~25kOhm pots. I don't know if the Dimebucker is actibe aswell?
I'd rather keep it more simple and stick with passive pickups, if it was me.

Here's a thread on different brands of pickups

Alright. It is only shorting on the 5th switch. I have to press the switch down really hard for it to sound, otherwise it's dead.

You've got to open and have a look for any obvious errors.
