Hey guys! I was reading on Outworld's forum about who ordered the Dean RC-7 and there are many people from UK, Sweden and other European countries and they mentioned import tax. I ordered the guitar but the guy from the store i was in contact with didn't mention anything. I asked him how much will i have to pay for shipping and he told me 165$. Ok, it's a good price. Now, what started to bother me is the import tax.
Have any of you ever ordered a piece of equipment from another country? Amps, effect, guitar? Did you have to pay the import tax or only shipping? -------------------- "It isn't how many years you have been playing, it's how many hours." -- Prashant Aswani "PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!" -- Michael Angelo Batio Check out my video lessons and instructor board! |

$165 sounds right for a guitar, when my Bandmate ordered his PRS From UK, It was about $145 for the tax.

I'll have to pay around 500$ only for taxes. But anyway it's the only way.

Yes because the guitar is 1900$ and from what i have heard here the tax is like 20-25% of the price so, you know, i am kinda prepared to give away 500$. I hope it will be less.

Does the 1900USD include some element of US tax? (Some shops etc include local country tax in the price and some don't. If you export then you shouldn't pay the local country tax but your own. ) If it does then you should get that offset against the @500 you'd pay on importation Pavel and you can quote a lower purchase price for tax calculation. Just a thought...

I wonder how the people on customs know the price of the shipment!?!? I really have no idea how this works because it's my first time ordering from another country!
I just checked the invoice i received from the shop and there is a place where it says: STATE TAX: 0.00 - what does this mean? Not too sure Pavel but looks like they have charged nothing for a local state tax. Does the invoice say anything about VAT (UK term) or Sales Tax (which I think is the US equivalent of VAT)?
BTW - last time I bought something from abroad the export company/manufacturer had to declare the value to the shipping company (in this case UPS) who then collected the tax on behalf of UK Customs and Excise. So even if someone might want to under-declare this would help prevent it. In the UK it would also be an tax offense to under value... I've ordered from Germany and payed the local german price + shipping (~15 Euro). That's all.
If my goods get stuck in the customs I will have to pay swedish VAT, they will then withdraw what I already payed (german VAT) and add swedish VAT so that would be a bit extra. Regarding taxes (spot tax) if differes from country to country and you should really call the customs to see what they would charge. I wouldn't pay any spot tax up front especially not to the store, I'd only pay if the customs find it. Did you order this from the US, right? Sometimes they are a bit picky about their goods, like some stuff stores aren't even allowed to ship abroad. It would be no problem for them to send it anonymously and add a note saying "you forgot this" or "happy b-day friend". Probably huge stores won't but eBay stores does if you ask them nicely. Or you would run it by a friend in the US to whom you'd order your amp/guitar/pu's or whatever. He packs it and sends it to you as a gift. That would work for you unless you order 100 pcs of EVO pu's with a clear intention to sell. -------------------- My bands homepage
