Does anyone use a POD?

I'm new to playing electric guitar, but I keep hearing about the Line6 POD. I checked their website, but the info is pretty vague for a novice.

My general idea of the POD is that it's used to simulate the sounds of classic guitar amps like Marshall and Fender.

Beyond that, I don't know anything about it. Does anyone use a POD? Can you use it to play live, or is it strictly for recording to a computer?

The line 6 pod is the most versatile piece of gear on the planet

It simulates the sound of many classic guitar and bass amps (over 130 now for the XT series) all very acurately. it also simulates the cabinets and speakers these amps are played through.

You can use it live but it also has many options for recording directly to the computer.

it has over 70 effects and 8 wah wah pedals inbuilt, so its pretty much anything u could ask for. their not to expensive either considering their features.

Thanks for the info, and sorry I didn't notice the other topic before I posted this.

I have one more question though. In your opinion, is the POD worth buying for someone like me? I just started playing the electric guitar a month ago, and I need a decent practice amp that sounds good at low volume. I'm living in an apartment right now, so I can't exactly crank it to 11.

Could a beginner benefit from something like this, or would it only be helpful after you've been playing for a few years?

Thanks for the help.

Yeah, it sure could be helpful and certainly more fun to be able to play with different sounds. And to play with headphones.
It's not really for live performances since the sound becomes a bit "plastic" but for practice it's good.

And if you're a newbie all the effects you can set can become a bit overwhelming. Knowing what a real phaser or chorus pedal sound like is good to know before, but not a must.

One matter you could think of is if you sometime want to be able to record your playing on a computer and if the POD then can work as a soundcard.

Actually, a POD may be ideal for you in your situation.
You can use it with headphones so you dont need an amp.
The sound you hear in the headphones though will sound like you have a GREAT amp.

As for volume levels through an amp - that is down to the amp - the POD is only a tone shaper - so it makes the sound - the amp is what makes it loud.

If you have a seperates HI-FI the POD also comes into its own as you can plug it into that amp , or any hi-fi for that matter as it will sound fantastic. (dont try it without a POD though as it sounds terrible!!)

So, Yes, a POD would fit your needs on a number of levels.

for the live issue it depends on what pod u get the pod 2.0 or the pod xt. Those wont be good live. but if u get the pod xt live just by the name you know its meant to play live.

Wait, so you don't need an amp to hear the pod? Interesting, you just plug your headphones in and you can hear it?

PODs are pretty sweet, but if you're just gonna be using one for practice / recording, get Guitar Rig 2 from Bit Torrent instead. tongue.gif

Absolutely. Good for practicing where noise is an issue.

On the Pod forums they tricked the people at the rectofier forums into thinking their recording was a triple recto.... and that was ages ago and since then the technology has evolved alot
