After being a "Final Cut Guy" for many years, I"ve finally had to cut the cord when I realized I was using ADOBE Products for everything video related. If you are looking for a great way to edit video in a professional way, you can download the Adobe Premeiere CC trial for free for three months and you purchase it as a subscription of $20 per month which is not bad considering the Previous Premiere version cost $995 up front. Premiere is a pro level app but it may be overkill.

If you want to keep things a bit more more budget minded, you can get the very good SONY VEGAS editor for $495. It looks and feels a LOT like adobe premiere.

What do you think of the subscription model? Personally, I have a hard time accepting it. I use After Effects a lot, but I use cs6, the last version before they went to the subscription model. But, I just recently gave in and finally subscribed to Spotify. Audio software vendors are watching Adobe closely. Avid is obviously committed to the subscription model and Slate recently offered it as an option.

It's got it's pros and cons for sure. It beats shelling out $1000 for a new software package to be sure but I don't currently have any adobe subscriptions. I"m using PREMIERE PRO CS5 along with other adobe aps in CS5 which was before the subscription thing. I'll probably wait until I have to have the new version for a freelance gig or something. Til then CS5 works just fine

But overall, the ENTIRE industry is shifting towards the SUBSCRIPTION model for software licensing. IT may take a few years to see if it sticks or not. But that's what's on deck for sure

I think that the subscription model for software is a positive new thing. I personally don't have Spotify as they don't support my country and I use Deezer which is a similar service. At the moment there is no need for me to get a subscription as the benefits of it are not motivating me to do so (you get ability to stream from mobile devices on the go and no ads streaming yet there are very few ads being played at the moment). I do enjoy this service tremendously, it helps me discover and listen to music in format that I really enjoy which is listening to full albums. Also, like to be able to browse through the artist catalogue in "albums listing" format with the artwork and everything + the sound quality is consistent and good. This way I learn more about which songs are on which album, when they were released etc. I hate the chaos of listening to music via Youtube for example. If Deezer would change something and I would not find the free membership sufficient, I would surely sign up!

Now, I'm really glad that this model is spreading to software as well and Adobe. For the kind of pro and expensive software they provide, it feels like a huge deal to me to be able to get it for a relatively small amount on monthly basis. The type of work done using their software surely makes the subscription price seem very affordable as it pays itself off. Also, this allows us to always get the latest updates and version of the software. When we don't need it - we just cancel the subscription. So I think that this deal is awesome and hope to see other software companies following it. For example Cubase and other high end music DAWs.
