Hi

Welcome to my second collaboration. This time we have BOOGIE.

The chord progression:

A - 8 bars (minor/major pentatonic, blues scale or mixolydian scale)
D - 4 bars (better option is mixolydian or stay in A pentatonic)
A - 4 bars (minor/major pentatonic, blues scale or mixolydian scale)
G - 1 bar (Major scale, major pentatonic - lydian and mixolydian will also work)
D - 1 bar (mixolydian)
A - 1 bar (minor/major pentatonic, blues scale or mixolydian scale)
outro fill in E - (mixolydian)

Attention everybody !!!

You have to record 2 separate takes. Please watch the intro video about all the details.

There is no limit for participants. Anyone can play.

The deadline is 20. February (two weeks).

Will certainly try to produce something before the 20th, but not sure whether I am going to make it (too many other things going on currently). If I did not submit by the 20th, just let it go smile.gif

Thanks ztevie smile.gif I don't think it will be more than 25 anyway. Even with 25 I need 5 days to record all the comments. This collab is actually not getting a huge response as the last one. I remember I had 15 people in just 1 hour after I posted the thread. They might be worried about all the scales I suggested in the 1st post smile.gif But nothing really to worry about, those are just suggestions. This track is pretty much straight forward rock/bluesy kind of style, just a faster type of it.

I think you might not have so many because there's a lot going on right now. Muris just started 2 collabs and 1 competition. February months 3-level competition was just announced the other day... And some more stuff also just started.
This is very straight-forward stuff, I agree. It's faster, but it's really very basic, so noone should be afraid trying...
It can be a challenge to make a solo stick out I think, be more interesting so to speak. Let's see if the participants can find some way to escape the "normal" soloing for this kind of stuff and make it a little bit special.

I am already in Mirus's Fusion collab but want to do yours also. 2 week time limit is the same for both so that's going to be tough.

I will try really hard to upload a track but I only get to play once or twice a week.

I will start with both collabs tomorrow.

Also what does all this mean. Recording a dry take? With no effects? How do you get it to sound how we want without effects and without being us? Also how do you record in mono and do you record left speaker or right speaker or does it not matter? I'm completely lost as normally I just dial in my tone and record a take with and without backing.

He want everything dry and will add effects by himself to make it fit in the mix in a better way. I understand that you want your sound with effects to come through. What you can do is record it dry in the track without a backing, and then on the backing you add your effects so he hear what you want it to sound like tonewise...
Even if you record mono you will have sound in both left and right channel. I don't know what software you're using, but in Cubase, even if I record mono I will have sound in both without adjusting settings. Stereo recording is only necessary if you for example want delay bouncing differently in left and right channel (ping-pong delay maybe?). And maybe if you use Pod X3 with 2 tones together left/right, I think?
Guitar is a mono instrument anyway so recorded dry it doesn't matter. You will have smaller files this way...

I know what you mean, haha... It is really dificult to get the same feel when playing dry. With delay and reverb I get loads more of sustain and hang in the tone, so recording dry will make me have to dig into the strings more and play cleaner...

ztevie has already explained this but I would just add that you can put your effects on the insert channel in your DAW. That way you can hear while recording but the effect will not be recorded unless you tick that option in the export dialog box (window).

Believe me that the sound engineer makes these effects during mixing. His guitar signal is as dry as possible during recording but he can hear the effects while playing. When they play live that's something different.

edit: When I say dry signal, I don't mean you should switch the distortion off. Only delays and reverbs if you have any

Posted by: fatb0t Feb 10 2009, 02:19 PM

Thank you.

How can delay be with no feedback? If I set feedback to 0 you won't hear any delay.

Posted by: ztevie Feb 10 2009, 02:24 PM

Yeah, using software effects is an option of course...
But I like to use my POD xt for all effects and everything, so I don't need to put extra load on the PC. IN the POD it's possible to reamp though, which is neat... That means I can record with full effects and everything and hear that, but only the dry, clean guitar signal gets recorded into the track(not even distortio or amp simulation or anything gets recorded). Then I can put the recording on a loop, and sit and adjust everything in the pod while the totally clean track gets played through the pod again. I can then rerecord that dry signal with my adjusted effect/amp/whatever. So basically I can change my mind a million times about the sound and never play that same piece again.

I've worked two days straight on this collab, I've yet to come up with anything I remotely like hahahaha.
Plus I know Emir is serious about critiquing these takes so I want to put my best foot forward so to speak...

Yeah, you can't cheat this guy biggrin.gif
If something is done halfhearted you will proably hear about it in the review..

EDIT: Just improvised over this piece for a while. Reeeeally bluesy stuff coming outta my fingers here.. Nice! I'll keep it that way, I think.? Simple and without overplaying...

Stereo recording is only necessary if you for example want delay bouncing differently in left and right channel (ping-pong delay maybe?). And maybe if you use Pod X3 with 2 tones together left/right, I think?

Even in this case you record mono. That's why you have L and R output. You arm 2 tracks for recording in your software and you record them simultaneously L and R both mono then you pan them. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to separate them if I want to change anything either on L or R side. For this collaboration that wouldn't be necessary as we are not producing million dollars record but in a proper studio they would record you separately.

I am not asking to send me the track without distortion. I don't have the same equipment as you so I can't recreate your original distorted sound. I am only talking about delays because if you have too much of it then it might not fit in the mix properly and I am not able to remove it.

Thanks for earlier explaination smile.gif

QUOTE (OrganisedConfusion @ Feb 10 2009, 10:56 AM) *
Also how do you record in mono and do you record left speaker or right speaker or does it not matter?

Let me explain this. Mono signal is not only L or R channel. Mono is when you bounce both L and R into one channel. So either you listen L or R you will hear the same thing, no panning works in mono. Just open your track for recording and set it to be a mono track. You will still hear your sound in both speakers but only one wave form will be recorded instead of two (L and R). Then I can pan your guitar in the mix somewhere and together with other panned instruments I will produce final mastered stereo track. I hope you understand this. Ask me if you have any problems. I can do a video tutorial about this if that helps.

Cheers

How can delay be with no feedback? If I set feedback to 0 you won't hear any delay.

Hi Emir,
With the VST delay I am using, if delay is set to some value and feedback is set to 0, I am getting the delay effect.
I looked at the help on delay effect and it showed this: "The Feedback parameter allows you to send some of the delayed audio back into the delay effect, so it will play again after the delay period. This can be used to create a long series of echoes."
Anyhow, if you need to add a feedback value I'll leave it to your judgement.

Ok I understand. It's a bit strange for delay to work like that but OK. I heard your take and I think I know how to get that sound. Thanks

Hey Emir smile.gif

Do you have room for one more? Ill would like to give it a shot, and see how it goes.

Also i just want to make sure i get this right. I know you mentioned no effects like delay etc.. I use Guitar Rig in Pro Tools to record with. And load that as a effect on the track so i can get distortion etc. Is that ok? Or do you want me to just mic my amp and record raw distoreted and clean sound like that? I prefer to use Guitar Rig because if i turn up my Marshall amp where i want it its going to destroy my whole neighborhod. biggrin.gif

Hi Emir! I'll give this one a shot.
I was a little worried about making sure I could finish Muris's Lydian collab. But now that that's done, I think I can focus on this for nine days.

Killer backing. I'll do my best.

Thanks,

Hi Guys

I have uploaded my take on this backing track. You can find it in the first post of this thread. I am doing a boogie lesson for GMC so this will be my solo. You don't need to play this fast. This take is just for the lesson. However if you can produce something similar then you are very welcome to upload it smile.gif

Man I am sure you will play some awesome lines smile.gif

This video is uploaded from Vegas directly to Youtube. There is a great option "upload to youtube". It's asks you for your youtube username/password and you edit your video info in Vegas. You have 2 video qualities to chose from. This was "higher" quality option so I believe Youtube can't really produce better than this. I am not sure what codec is used automatically for youtube export. When I export myself (as you will see in this lesson in a couple of weeks) this actually looks much better.

Yes when I export to my hard drive it is much better. I use mp4 codec. I think Youtube does its own coversion so that's why the quality is not as good but it's not a Vegas problem.

You need to set up your soundcard latency through the ASIO driver options. Make it 10ms or below that. My one is on 7ms. Alternatively move it manualy until you find the position but definitely find this option and sort it out. If you are using Sonar or Cubase you can start something called wave profiler and it automaticaly sets yout sound card for optimal performance. If you have built-in sound card on your motherboard then you need a free driver called AsioForAll. Look in Google for that. This card is actualy not recomended for recording.

Ok Emir, here's my completed takes.
As you've requested, I recorded the guitar parts dry with more gain on the 2nd part.
Feel free to add the effects that you see work best. In my mix, I ended up using a lot of delay, especially for the second part. I used a stereo delay with 450 ms in the left side, and 300ms in the right. This is equivalent to 1.5 whole notes in the left side and 1.0 whole notes in the right when synched to the tempo. I find that when sync'ing the delay to the tempo, it gives you that deep, huge sound without cluttering up the beat with a bunch of discrete echos. For feedback, I had it set to about 25% on each side. This lets you hear about four echo's before they die out completely. I set the delay mix (wet to dry) to about 10 percent. This keeps the echos proportional to the mix without over doing it. For the 1st guitar part, I used the same settings only with less feedback and lower mix settings. For reverb, I just used a "Hall" reverb with the level set low enough so that it doesn't start to sound like a tunnel. No other effects besides delay and reverb were used on the guitars. I'd like to learn more about using effects wisely in the mix, that's for sure.

I hope you like it. It turned out pretty good I think. smile.gif

Hey Emir,

With the deadline aproaching, I thought finishing this would be a good idea tongue.gif So that's what I did xD I've uploaded three files, the mix one speaks for itself. Part 1 means the Bass/drumms only part, and part 2 is the latter of the two parts. I have to say.. this is the one collab with the most overdubbing and stop-recordings I've ever done tongue.gif I also wrote the second part partially... I found it quite hard to come up with something good on the first part... and I found it so hard that I couldn't really find anything good.... so sorry bout that tongue.gif

Effect: pls edit some reverb/delay for a bit of a more outstanding sound in the first part, a bit jazzy, do what you think is needed! For the second part, I'd like some delay and maybe some reverb to get the nice smooth rock'n roll sound.

Thanks for doing this Emir!

Man, I'm finding this one incredibly challenging. I can hear what I want to play, but I just don't have the speed to do it, or familar positions to use to play it.

This is very unfamiliar territory for me, but only one way to learn! I'll keep at it!

You don't need to play fast to make it sound good. Go for longer notes and it should be easier.

Posted by: Ajmurrell Feb 20 2009, 01:34 AM

Emir, here is my take:

 emir_collab_boogie_mixdown.mp3 ( 1.72MB ) : 147

 emir_collab_boogie_drive.mp3 ( 1.72MB ) : 100

 emir_collab_boogie_clean.mp3 ( 1.72MB ) : 100

I found this one much harder, I'm not sure why, it might be my lack of knowledge in regards to scale use and even playing in triplet feel.

I tried to implement the advice as best I could from the last collab, but because I use Adobe Audition I found it difficult to achieve the same set up you had.

Essentially in the multi-track recording software I use, when I select a track with an existing recording on it, and try to record over it - it mutes what ever is being played underneath.

What I tried to do instead was play in two seperate channels in order to achieve a few takes when I messed up.

Hope it achieves the same effect!

I'm not totally happy with this recording, but only because I couldn't get the groove down properly due to my lack of experience with whatever it is i'm missing for this collab!

Awesome work on the backing, and with your own take.

Cheers man smile.gif

do you think you can tab out that solo in guitar pro 4 format or regular tabs?

i really like and want to study some of the phrasing you did

I think I remember Emir saying that it's going to be an official lesson here at some point soon.

Might be wrong though!

Hey Emir, I hope all is well with you.

Another great collab you got going here! Some really good takes.

I am in Muris boot camp right now and this is where I need to be (my focus is on moving to the next level). I won't be uploading anything or taking part in any collabs for a while. I'm sure you understand.

When Muris gives me a weekend pass for a job well done then I will hunt your collabs down and upload.

Cheers bro! smile.gif

Hi Emir

I had time today finally to mess a bit your backing track. This is my improvised take, its far from perfect but I decided to upload because I promised I would submit it today smile.gif

On the side note, my Nuendo has trouble exporting Stereo so I exported everything as Mono , hope you will accept that !

Anyways - shoot me with your criticism now laugh.gif
Thanks man

P.S. If I had extra day I would get it to sound stronger smile.gif

C'mon guys, get your entries up here now! We had enough time to record something on this collab already? Maybe some people are not used to solo over Boogie, neither am I. But just do your best, and take it from there, you know you'll be getting some valuable advice on how to improve, noone does it perfect anyway... So click that upload button, you know you want to! cool.gif

Here is my take Emir, hope you like it.

For low gain drive I used:

-Some Reverb (its up to you)
-Delay
Delay Timing 1/2Triplets
Delay Feedback %15
Delay Mix %5

For high Gain I used:
-Chorus
Chorus Frequency: 2.00 Hz
Chorus Delay: 2 ms
Chorus Mix: %20
-Delay
Delay Timing 1/2 Triplets
Delay Feedback %18
Delay Mix: %7
-Reverb (its up to you)

Sure those are not written on stone, but I am sure you've got the picture so feel free to do anything if you think it will sound better laugh.gif

That was a great backtrack and challenging too. Thank you!!!

Hey Emir

I somehow mistaked the deadline to be the 27th. But saw it was today and made up something quite fast. I have a friend over, so didn't have a lot of time. Anyway, here it is:

[attachment=13802:Dexxter_...gie_NB_1.mp3]
[attachment=13801:Dexxter_...gie_NB_2.mp3]

Edit: The first part is totally dry. I know that you have amplitube2, so you can use the preset BBClean, no tweaking, for the first part. Second part is custom setting, just removed the reverb for the dry take.

What!? You use your birthday for something else than this collab!? You are very lazy and have no loyalty to your collab-participants! biggrin.gif

No, seriously: Take your time. I thought you were far too ambitious the last time, spending day and night for our comments, and not even have time to play guitar yourself is not healthy. You need to relax some, just the fact you're doing videocomments is far beyond any expectations...
Relax man!! Enjoy your birthday, and take care of that hangover tomorrow... wink.gif

haha cool comments smile.gif Thank you guys.

I will do my comments the same as last time but this time I will make some hidden youtube account and embed the videos from there. I am really not lazy to do this but it takes a bit of time. Today I have some friends coming for my birthday so tomorrow after shower and a big coffee I am doing the videos. I will post them all together, not one by one.

I think that's fair!

Emir:
Thanks for your comments.

For the part you pointed out where I was playing all over the place with regard to the scale... I.e., When the backing track goes back to A during the second half. I thought that I was playing A Dorian actually, which is "major", so I thought that it would work. Did it sound out of key? ...I think my ears adapt to thinking everything's fine sometimes when I'm jamming.

When I get back home today, I'll post a tab of that section and double check that all the notes fit what I at least thought I was playing (i.e., A Dorian). Can you take a look to see what I might have done differently to make it better? I'll try to locate the minor 3rd that I was playing and change it to major to see if it sounds right or fits the underying chord. I think I see what you mean that you (the backing) were playing A7 which is major, and somewhere in the scale I was playing the minor third, but without picking up my guitar right now, I can't spot it. ...maybe after I get home today. huh.gif

I really enjoyed this collab. It brought out some chops in me that I didn't even know I had. biggrin.gif

Hi. Your take was good. I was just trying to tell you about careful scale use. Dorian is not a major scale. It has a minor 3rd so it can't be a major scale. Every time you play that minor 3rd it doesn't match the chord on the backing. A7 is a major dominant chord and has 1, 3, 5, b7. Mixolydian scale would be the best option (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, b7). If you want to play pentatonic scale then major or dominant pentatonic is better choice than minor pentatonic.

major pentatonic - 1, 2, 3, 5, 6
dominant pentatonic - 1, 2, 3, 5, b7

Don't worry about it too much. Your take wasn't bad. You will start to notice these things if you practice enough. Many other guys played minor 3rd and I told them the same thing.
