I have been really going at it here at GMC since I started. My technique has improved so much with all these video lessons but I feel my creativity has taken a hit because i find myself playing all the new riffs I learned. THis is a big reason why I never really learned cover songs growing up, could someone just give me some constructive feedback on how you practice these lessons and not find yourself just playing them or sounding like say muris, if I only could sound like you:)I'm not sure i am developing a solid practice routine, O i love this site and now that I am addicted i just want to make sure I am really using it to it's potential.

Peace,
Shammy

If we all ended up sounding like Muris it wouldn't be so bad!

Haha no of course I'm joking, its very important to find your own sound, and I empathise with the problem your having. I think basically its important to get an even balance of practicing GMC lessons aswel as spending plenty of time just messing about and trying to figuree your style out.
Also try to listen to and play as many styles as possible beacase it is often the case that an artists style is not 100% original, but a mixture of the styles of their influences, which in itself creates a unique style.

yeah I can dig that feedback guys, thanks. Another thing I was thinking about was how I feel I might be missing something that I should be working on, but because it is an open site for the picking I might have overlooked something I need, but just don't know it yet. Example, I am working on scales right now, tommorrow I might work on arpeggios. How do I know if I missing something that i should of learned in between if I'm not educated on these things to begin with. Maybe I mean like a lesson plan, ya know. I'm confusing myself now. I just want to be well rounded and not just know a bunch of tricks and licks. I would say I am a very good intermediate player, and feels like I have been stuck here forever, looking for that next leap that's all. Sorry if I seem all over the place. Peace

Learning guitar takes time and you aren't going to learn everything overnight.. Practice what you can find and when you find something else add it to the practice as well. Every little thing you can learn adds something to your guitar arsonal. And don;t worry about sounding like a particular artist for a while. When you learn many many different styles you can add flair from each one to create your own!.

I think maybe we ask too much of ourselves sometimes, cramming in so many lessons techniques etc

its quite exciting having all these open to me, I wanna get stuck in and learn the lot NOW laugh.gif , the trick is probably to slow down a little and concentrate on a couple of techniques at a time so that they can be introduced into our "everyday" playing rather than completly taking over, does that make sense? smile.gif

Well a great way to get your own style is with help from the site is to just try learning all different kinds of lessons, like a jazz lesson here from muris and metal lesson there from pavel, and a classical lesson somewhere else because although sometimes it may seem like your creativity is gone youve got to remember that EVERYONE has had their influences and there playing style is bit of those influences thrown in a blender then mixed up with some of your unique thoughts and ideas

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. Sometimes we just get overwhelmed and need to get a different perspective.

No need to be worried here at all smile.gif

When I was starting, everything I used to do was learning tunes and licks from various artists,
there's nothing wrong there as the matter of fact.

And then at some point a piece of you will start to take its share in your playing,
that's just how the things go,must start with something.
Mozart had Bach,List had Mozart etc.

All you have to do is to keep your practicing routing and never let it go,
sooner or latter you'll say..."hey,this IS the way how I play it". smile.gif

Thanks Muris, I watch your playing and I salivate over how easy and beautiful you make guitar playing look. I understand that you worked hard to be where you are and still push yourself, I just want that fluidity in my playing and do not want to miss something crucial. I will relax now and jam. thanks again. Peace

Don`t be down because you are stuck. Sometimes all of us feel that way. Just practise, organize your daily routine better and it will all come in time. You must be patient with the guitar and continue playing it for a long time before you can say it that you developed your own style and that you don`t sound like a lot of excersises from different influences. If everyone would get up developed their styles in a matter of 5-10 years, then it would be too easy. smile.gif

Oh this topic is exactly what i ask myself. I learn new lessons from here and can play them but I dont know how i develop my own Style. I have no ideas in my mind for cool riffs or solos. For me it is so hard to create a cool riff or solo and I dont know who i can practice that I am able to do this.

Do you have any advices how I can improve my low creativity:).

Edguy
