In the 60's and 70's music was often a means to get some sociopolitical statement across. Some artist really had something to say and had a strong political influence by fueling the protest movements of their respective decades. I think of the classical singer-songwriter " I play at every union meeting" type of girl/guy with a guitar around their neck (think Dylan, Baez and many more). The last decade holds not much promise in that aspect. I think music should be used to make statements so I hope things change and new players enter the field.

Do you think this is important. Or should music just be music for the musics sake ? Are you interested in lyrics with a message ?

Here some rather childish attempt of my own

http://soundcloud.com/alone-in-boston/hmd-...oral-deficiency

think of some "the walking dead" like scenery, populated with zombie like creatures infected by the human moral deficiency virus (HMV) which causes the Human Moral Deficiency Syndrome (HMD)

music, for me is about sound and pleasure, i don't care much about lyrics. I think it's okay to have messages and stuff, but it's not the thing i search.
but i guess that's a bit a reflection of my personality ,i am passive selfish person, i don't care much about what's happening around, only what makes me feel good and happy.

Nothing wrong with seeking things that make you happy.

Also: I don't always care for lyrics. Sometimes its just about someone singing some melody line that fits the bill. But sometimes I'd like to be touched somehow by the lyrics. Or made angry or be moved. Or whatever. And then if I listen to it and its some boring crap it makes me sad. I like to get punched in the face by the words and think that this can change things.

i understand, but to be honest, a piano intro can makes me depressed than any words would ever do tongue.gif, sorry i am just too insensitive to words when it cames to music biggrin.gif; but i do admire a well written lyrics (bit contradiction to my previous sentence, but oh well...)

To a great extent music tends to reflect society. I don't know about the USA but in the UK the 60s and 70s sociopolitically there was perhaps more of a belief that things could change and be changed. In the 80s in the UK things atomised and people moved to what has been termed the 'Thatcher Generation' - that is they are more concerned with self-interest than anything else, particularly collectivism. For UK politics since the 80s there are now only ideas, no ideology just vacuous ideas and spin.

Music was and will always be a channel for messages, so I think music can usually make a difference - check out this article here for instance:

I think for a song to have impact it has to strike people's hearts first and their heads second. You can have some really applicable political content or ideas in your lyrics but if the listener doesn't feel an emotional connection then there is less likely to be any effect from it. They may think 'Cool lyrics..' but that's it.

I think passion is contagious.. people can be drawn to it but in my own personal opinion there's nothing more off putting than an angry person shouting agendas and belief at me. That's not inspiring me.. it's just force meets force. Doesn't matter which side you're on - angels or the demons, corporation or the working man.. forcing people to see your views with oppression is just the same no matter where it's coming from and it makes me switch off. Life's too short to get involved in every cause you see on the news. You can find a worthy, justifiable cause in every corner of the world, in places you've never heard of and you can get angry about it and dedicate your life to fighting and fighting.. there's nothing actually wrong with that but you can also get swallowed by it and miss the fact that you're so busy being caught up in other people's fights that you forgot to tend to yourself. There's so much work to be done on ourself in one lifetime and it will never be complete. We should always be striving to be a better person. That does involve helping and inspiring other people but not as an excuse to avoid looking at ourselves.

Sorry for going way off topic there !! You do have a valid post here.. I think we should inspire whenever we can. If it were me, I would not seek so much to be too political and inspire anger or unrest I'm more interested in trying to inspire people to believe in themselves more and become better people. It all starts from there anyway. Change has to come from within first smile.gif

Two of my favourite bands Rise Against and Story of the year, both are quite vocal (pun intended) in writing about the need for change and responsibility. Whilst I my views may not completely line up with theirs, it does make a change from vapid love songs or metal bands singing about wizards.

Whilst I'm not a big fan of people getting on soap boxes, I think musicians can bring to light issues which affect the listener to the listener in a way that other mediums and people can't.

As Posterboy, I'm a fan of Rise Against and I love their lyrics. I also love Anti-Flag, to add yet another quite political band to the discussion. And let's not forget about Rage Against The Machine.
Lyrics are important to me, though they do not have to be political all the time. They just have to have a meaning. This can be a love song (yeah, Adele has some nice lyrics tongue.gif ), a funny song (think of the old Blink 182) or a song which just tells a good story (Iron Maiden's When The Wild Wind Blows comes to my mind since I just heard it).

I the sun ov man
The offspring ov the stellar race
My halo fallen and crushed upon the earth
That i may bring balance to this world

I son ov perdition
From sheer nothingness transgressed
Unto the highest self - to utmost freedom
To explore the starry nature ov my rage

I pulse ov existence
The law ov nature undenied
I hold the torch ov heraclites
So i can shake the earth and move the suns

I divine iconoclast
Injecting chaos into my veins
With life accepted
With pain resurrected
Is the embrace ov god in man profound

The joy ov a dawn
The ecstasy ov dusk
Nourished have I this karmic flow
Where great above meets great below
Let it be written
Let it be done
Scattered i walk towards the fractured light

35 years ov long journey
among the living dead
on nonsense nourish'd I
my naked soul and where am i?
in the palace ov underworld
without enemy nor friend
pay I for fathers legacy
half-man, half-beast
Demigod

and my anger was never fed
my desires never fulfilled
but my wish to become
the one with universe
has always entangled me
and forsaken I shall not be
though my flesh is torn apart
though my heart seems dead and cold
my will transgress
the spirit lives on!

To me, lyrics are as equally important as the music, I don't see how you could listen to music with a singer and not care about what they say. The voice is the only instrument to convey musicality and ideas in the way that it does, how one could ignore it is beyond me.

For me, the most powerful lyricists exist today. They make you think about what you are listening to, and sometimes you will never know the meaning of the actual words. You are forced to listen, contrive and deduce meanings through symbolism and subtlety. It's an art form completely all its own.

So, my conclusion is that music is most definitely a vessel for messages smile.gif the instrumental music for instance is a carrier of many messages, imagine that each human being has a different way of perceiving things, so, an instrumental piece means something different to each one of us.

Lyrics are usually the conventional way, let's say, but just music in itself may as well carry a message with a lot of success smile.gif
