Ive been really getting into Paul Gilbert lately and wow. tongue.gif I never really took the time to listen to what he had to say about the guitar and what not but what he says is really moving to myself. And I recall what Marty Friedman actually said something about scale boxes and how he developed his own scales by playing a chord and piecing together notes that sounded good with that chord because all in all he thought just playing a scale up and down was boring. But all this got me thinking and is there a correct way to about making your own speed runs that doesnt just sound like the scale itself going up and down ?

Should I be making my own scale sequences the sound good over different chords? Quite frankly im just bored with my lack of creativity, I see some guitarist play a crazy speed run and say, Wow why didnt I think of that ? Is there theory that comes into play with this ?

-Thanks , John

I usually stick to using 3nps scales, but i find that using an interesting pattern and dynamics stops it from sounding like a straight up scale. Rusty Cooley has ALOT of these patterns if you've seen the chops from hell instructional videos- and Paul gilbert is definatly one to watch for dynamics.

A good way of spicing things up is to skip around just a little - using 3nps, play 6 notes on 2 strings ascending, then start again on the 2nd stringstring, play another 6 notes, start again on the 2nd string, another 6 notes - means you get longer runs with a little more variety:

Track 1

E||-----------------------------------------------------------------12-14-16-|
B||-----------------------------------------------12-14-16-12-14-16----------|
G||-----------------------------11-13-14-11-13-14----------------------------|
D||-----------11-13-14-11-13-14----------------------------------------------|
A||--11-12-14----------------------------------------------------------------|
E||--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
