I need some help. You know Joe Bonomassa right? What scales does he paly over a 12 bar? I really think its not only pentatonic.. + What is the "blue nots" ? I've heard people about this. It seems to make pentatonic scales even bluesier..

Usual combination is X minor pentatonic/X dorian/X minor blues/X major third. For example, let's say you have X=A.

There's a plenty combinations there to make it sound whatever you want.

So dorian mode is used in the blues?! Didn't knew that. Thank's! That image is like, all of those scales combined? I know the Dorian mode pattern. I know the minor pentatonic boxes. So Minor blues... I don't know which that one is:D

The minor blues is is the minor pentatonic(1 b3 4 5 b7) with 1 additional note - a b5. So the scale formula is: 1 b3 4 b5 5 b7. This b5 is known as the devils interval - it has a certain dissonant tonality to it - a tritone. It also adds a chromatic feel to some licks and riffs.

You can also expand your Blues vocabulary using pentatonic only.
What you should do is to try all licks you know already in each of 5 boxes
of pentatonic scale,apply bends as well and you'll have tons of similar,
but still new licks. smile.gif

Great advice!

I would ad to learn one lick in 3 octaves and practice connecting it with click (metronome backing drum machine etc).

Also try applying rhythmic variation to all your licks - that way you will have lots of licks instead of just one!
