I very rarely post on the forums but I couldn't help but notice that Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has NEVER been mentioned. If you don't know him, he's from At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta, DeFacto, and has some solo records. What I think makes him really unique is his style. Its kinda like Robert Fripp meets Santana meets what happens when your on too much cough syrup. Here's a little taste:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Sl0i-oj1bx0 Its obviously not for everyone. My personal favorite stuff is on The Mars Volta's album Deloused in a Comatorium. http://youtube.com/watch?v=LPTuWLug3PA Its one of those albums you could listen to a million times and every time hear something you didn't hear the last time. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone that sounds remotely like The Mars Volta, save for maybe At the Drive-In. Anybody else a fan or am I alone here? |

The Mars Volta and Omar Rodriguez are amazing! I enjoy the travel that I do everytime that I listen to one of their albums. Maybe this is one of the most original contemporary rock band. I like all their albums and also At the drive-in. who doesn't know this song... http://youtube.com/watch?v=VdWHaKF1khs

I was just about to make a thread about this guy. I love his work, and his style of music is primarily what I'm interested in. Frances the Mute was my favourite of Volta, was never really a fan of At The Drive In, and I adore his solo and quintet stuff.
Would anyone be interested in doing a style lesson of him? Specifically his strange stuff like: 2:10 of http://youtube.com/watch?v=zykM-XOZIsY&feature=related or 0:30 of http://youtube.com/watch?v=-q8cGtUJavU |
