'Merica is a big place, so we know not all of it's 'Merican citizens are up (yes I can write, not illigal here).

But there is discrimination towards blacks, muslims, gays... and then often when they try to do something positive for a minority they go too far and that up too rolleyes.gif

They can't legally do that. The Supreme court already ruled in the past that, "Your constitutional rights don't end at the schoolhouse door." All it will take is a legal challenge.

Personally I believe they should ban all flags - including the NZ flag. All flags do is divide us...

'Flags are bits of colored cloth that governments use first to shrink-wrap people's minds & then as ceremonial shrouds to bury the dead.'

They shouldn't individually say ban one flag over another however, rather just get rid of them all or not at all.

Patriotism is fine to a point. Then it becomes just a fancy word for 'racism'. Appearing as an outward hate towards others because of your nationality and suggesting yours is better than others. That then leads to stereotyping of all nations. Some appear stuck up while others struggle. It what fuelled the terrorist attacks, etc, in the first place.

Most patriots are not rude, they just love where they live. Which is great, but this goes all the way down to their kids - where they sing/chant in schools with their hand other their chest, pledging their allegiance to die for their country and support their power hungry government no matter what it does. Some see it differently. Some use extreme patriotism to mock other countries or brag, it just depends on the extent. Other can easily use it to control and lead. To blindly lead those to their death for what they believe is fighting for freedom, but in reality just invading others for their resources and differences.

It's a speech v. conduct argument - which has always at the center of almost any and all First Amendment issues.
(the yelling of "fire" in a crowded building debate) The 1st amendment is deep.

Well yeah it's your constitutional right to burn it, but a lot of Americans are gonna beat your ass if you do.

Political correctness run amok. Tolerance is a two way street. And the idea that rules and laws can keep people from being offended usually ends up offending more. You can't go thru life without somehow, somewhere along the way being offended. People should just get over it already and grow up.

Yeah, and like I said, it's complicated ... which makes it fluid.
I wasn't there (in San Jose) so I don't know how aggressive and potentially threatening the wearing of the flag t-shirts was - ?
When 'speech' has been really hateful and threatening - symbols and some conduct count as speech - it has been ruled against - as well as overturned.
There are thousands of library shelves solely dedicated to the 1st Amendment.

*I personally don't get bent out of shape when I see another American burn an American flag - I just think they're juvenile.
But I have witnessed, more than once, an American flag burning in another country. It's scary.

I live right by San Jose. Trust me it's not dangerous to wear a flag T-shirt. It's the safest big city in the U.S. While it does have a large Mexican/Chicano population; nobody is gonna be offended by wearing an American flag T-shirt. The school is probably being too politically correct on Cinco de Mayo.

I think the only 'flag' shirts I own are a Captain America t-shirt and a Rolling Stones Union Jack t-shirt.

As I said, I wasn't at that particular school in San Jose and I have no idea whether or not the american flag shirts were meant to intimidate Mexican Americans on one of their holidays (a holiday which has absolutely zero to do with the USA - Mexico v. France). Could be an over-reaction, or maybe not - ?

As a Jew I generally don't dig seeing Nazis and Aryan Nation guys marching down US streets. It offends me, it scares me and it's meant to be hateful, aggressive and provocative. I'm glad 'most' cities here don't allow it. Freedom of speech - in my opinion - has a limit. Most courts think so too.

*And yes, I have beer opened - it's after 3:00 pm here wink.gif
