Playing Lessons At Comfortable Speed Options

Hi all,

What do you think about playing Lessons at comfortable or below comfortable speed?

I think this should be a good idea to encourage you to practice lessons beyond your level and improve a lot.

As a student when entering the rec zone and you are trying to improve a lot of the time you can get advice like "slow down a bit until your hand sync is better or timing is better etc."

I think it would be useful to see if we are practicing correctly at comfortable speed or below comfortable speed so we can further increase speed until we master the lesson at full speed.

Your hand sync sounds pretty good at this tempo as far as I can tell, but I would say your timing here could be tighter.

I have to admit I personally struggling playing tight at slower tempos as well!

you want perfection , you can practice a little bit pushing yourself , but always leave your last practice slow enough for your brain to hear perfection..you are not programming your fingers ,you are syncing your fingers to your brain and as soon as your brain "hears" it your fingers will soon follow

It's hard for me to see where I messed up my timing, so I thought I should add a metronome on the backing track to see.

Still not able to spot the places where my playing is not tight.

Thanks. Listen to 00:30 to 00:34 where we cannot really hear there are two different lead instruments playing at the same time. If your playing was like this all the time - you would be tight on a pro level.

Around 25 seconds in, I can hear you lagging a bit behind the beat. You are about an eighth of a second behind from the sound of it. When working to tighten up playing and using a metronome, that trick we talked about in your boot camp can be handy. E.G. Increase the clicks of the metronome so that there is a click available to synch each and every strike to. That way you can tell, at every single strike point, if you are on or off. Developing your internal metronome takes time. One thing that can help is drums. Have you ever played drums? I really believe that learning basic drumming can be a HUGE help to any musician regardless of their primary instrument. You don't even need drums. You can simply "Air Drum". Get your hands and feet accustomed to doing different things at different times. E.G. Hitting the high hat using th notes, the snare using on half notes and the kick drum opposite half notes to the snare. A basic rock beat. Playing drums allows the brain to adapt to counting time. Play along to songs that you like using your air drum kit. It's how I taught myself to play drums before I ever bought my first cheap drum kit which is what helped me to get my internal metronome working which was a HUGE help when playing guitar.
