GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Sweeping Question

After doing Pavel's 3-string sweeps lesson and Gabriel's neoclassical sweeping and legato lesson (found it in the members choice box at the main page), I was wondering how I could start to use basic 3 and maybe 2 string sweeps in my improvisations?

well, im not that good at sweeping so correct me if im wrong here. You could probably pick some Sweep shapes to use in your improvisations, and modify them. Try to learn as many shapes as possible, and you'll be able to choose from many when improvising.

You use basic shapes to build sweeping technique! Later you can apply it to anything you want. You can apply it to any chord you know, any 2 string lick combined with legato, basically you'll know it when to use it once you get it down! smile.gif

On the subject of sweeps ...

I was playing this last night, I used to alt pick it but I'm finding it feels good to do it this way - is it a sweep or does it have too many hammerons? Where do you draw the line ???

|---3---| |---3---| --
S S S S S S
E||-------------12h----------||
B||--12h-13h-15-----15p-13---||
G||--------------------------||
D||--------------------------||
A||--------------------------||
E||--------------------------||

So here I would hit the firat note with a downstroke, hammer on the next 2 notes, hot the 4th note with an upstroke, and hammer on the next 2 notes as pure legato ...

Any thoughts anyone?

I wouldn't say it's sweep because you are actually doing - Down +2xlegato+up+2xlegato! If you ask me - it's not sweeping!

Btw. related to the pattern you want to play - it will be MUCH easier to play, and especially fast if you go - 12-13-15-17-15-13-12 - 4 notes per string! You can do it both legato (pick each time you get to B ), or play it full alternate picking! smile.gif Stretches will be painful first but they rule!

Andrew - let us know how it worked with 4nps! I really want to know your opinion! smile.gif It's amazing for long shred runs. You see you can play same notes in dozens different ways - guitar rules!!!

After you practice 4nps stuff, 3nps scales are nothing! smile.gif Just like warm-up on bass guitar before practice session on regular guitar!

I agree, warming up on a bass loosens me up so much faster than sitting down and playing some warm up on the guitar for 5 or 10 min
