Hi there! How cool is that! Thank you!
Getting right on your questions :
Goals :
Off course there is the most common goal I share with I think every member to this site. I want to get better on guitar.
But seriously - to achieve that I need to subdivide this one into smaller, easier reachable goals.
1. Technique- Legato playing
( it was never my strength ) I always thought alternate is the real deal, being influenced by players that I like to hear (Steve Morse, Petrucci to give you an example) I based my focus on alternate picking, where I think I am pretty good so far
.
- Advanced Tapping
String Skipping Taps Sequences , Scale Tapping Sequences. To get some new tools to add to my improvising vocabulary.
- INSIDE PICKING
I need to improve that
2. Musical - My main goal here is to get a better understanding of more advanced improvisation concepts.
I want to get a deep understanding on modes and melodic minor scaling and when and especially WHY I can use them at a certain point in the music. I have the feeling that I am stuck there at the moment.
-If I will get better at the previous point, I hope that it will have effect on "self adjusting" already known Scales. From my understanding you can base any scale-variation to the basic ionian/aeolian scale. You just modify them. I want to do this on the spot.
Right now I think too much while adjusting.
3. Discipline-I am usually spending at least an hour a day rehearsing gmc lessons and other guitar stuff. On the weekends its sometimes more. It depends on how much I need to work.
-I want to film at least one gmc REC Video a month. I surely want to do more, but I can not really record myself at home. I need to be in the rehearsing room for that. That will give me just one day on the weekend for that.
I could write all night on that list, but I think it should give you an overview and a point to start with.
To my actual knowledge:Hmm. It is hard to answer that. But I try.
I have good knowledge in :
- Basic Scales
- Penta Scales
- Alternate Picking
- Sweep Technique
- Arpeggio Shapes 5, 6 and 7 String
- Timing / Timing Signatures
That should also be enough to start with I think.
What do you think Is a good way to start? Currently I just practice gmc lessons as they come.
Thanks again for Mentoring me
! I am excited
!
Stefan.

Stefan
I need a little time to think man, I mean, in that REC take you kinda played flawless
we can start dealing with modes, for the moment and see what else comes up
I think it's best to start from here, so what do you say mate?
Cosmin
First of all - thanks to all of you for your kind words.
They are very welcome and greatly appreciated
.
But back to the subject
: Yes Cosmin I would like to start dealing with modes. Sounds like a cool idea.
I am looking forward to it! Onwards!

Alrighty man!
first of all - what do you know about modes and how have you been using them so far?
Hey Cosmin,
ok... here is what I know. Sorry if its a little unstructured, but I think you will see my gaps best this way.
First of all there are 7 Modes :
ionian, dorian, phyrgian, lydian, mixolydian, aeolian, lokrian.
ionian is equal to natural maj . and aeolian to natural minor.
If I start with the C-ionian scale I get :
C D E F G A B . If I harmonize the scale I have : Cmaj7 Dm Em7 Fmaj7 G7 Am7 Bm7b5.
I proceed now with numbers : 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 starting with Cmaj7 as 1.
The Fingerprint of a C-ionian scale is : halftone steps between 3 and 4 ; 7 and 8
The Fingerprint of a A-aeolian scale is: halftone steps between 2 and 3 ; 5 and 6.
In regards to the fact that both Scales share the same tonal material - its the order of the halftone steps what makes the different sound. I think its the same with all the other modes.
For example if a Song is in Fmaj, which has a Bb in it. I am able to play in the F-ioninan Scale off course.
But if for some reason a Fmaj7 occurs I am able to switch to the C-ionian Scale, which makes the Sound F-lydian, because the C-ionian Scale has no Bb in it, but a natural B. And that makes the sound.Right?
So far my theoretical knowledge ( And I just think that I am right
) in practical it is even more difficult.
I stick to my example :
Song is in Fmaj. ... Fmaj7 comes, thinking begins. ok... Fmaj7 minus 4 Steps...ahh ok Cmaj. play in C man!! Noooo, already over..... Song is transposed to Gmaj.....ultimate brain meltdown begins!
If I have MUCH time to sort out the different parts of a Song, I might be able to add some mode sounding melodies to it.
But Modes are not part of my improvisation knowledge. And I want them to be !
But I don't know where to start.
Thats it !
