Ozzy was there in the beginning, but Dio is the one that made their songs really epic (damn I hate that word). Get the DVD 'Heaven and Hell' and you'll see what I mean.

I know its hard not to agree that both heavn and hell, and the sign of the southern cross to take two examples from the Dio era arn´t any thing less but epic smile.gif its just something with sabbath/ozzy/ and the V-fingers trademark that fits better than dio´s appearence in sabbath. for me Dio is best as a solo artist smile.gif

I've debated that with myself several times, I think Dio had one of the best voices ever. Though Ozzy was more suitable for the 70's Sabbath I think Dio was just right for the early 80's. Mob rules, Live Evil, Heaven and Hell. Three of the top albums for me.

Those albums were tight there when I was shaping as a kid. Most underrated song would be Lonely is the word.
Going with Dio on this though I'm split smile.gif

To me, Ozzy was Sabbath so I voted accordingly. Note however that my vision on this is tainted with age... I have been a fan of Black Sabbath since the mid 70's. That being said.. if you were to ask you had the better voice then obviously I would cast my vote for Dio. Anyone who gets praise from Ritchie Blackmore has got to be outstanding and I truly believe that Ronnie James Dio was the most talented metal vocalist of all time. His work in Elf, Rainbow and in Dio is nothing short of incredible.

To be honest, I have never been a big fan of Ozzy. However, as he was part of forming the sound that made Sabbath famous, I guess I should vote for him. On the other hand, Dio had the best rock voice ever, and I am a big fan of him. Accordingly, in my opinion, he sounds better under any circumstances. Tough call, this poll..

Sabbath were a different sounding beast in the 70's and then the 80's. For 70's Sabbath Ozzy sounds the best, their sound is instantly recognisable and classic. But they couldn't have made an album like Heaven & Hell or Mob Rules with anyone but Dio so it all comes down to what you consider Black Sabbath 'is'. The band from the 70's or the band from the 80's and beyond. I think Headless Cross and Tyr contains some of Tony Iommi's best guitar work ever.. he reached heights he never did previously, and that was with Tony Martin on vocals so it's an endless question...

Dio would make any band he sang with sound good.. but if we consider Sabbath the guys that did those classic 70's albums then it has to by Ozzy by default.
