Mr Muris,
I was wondering what exactly is a preamp? I have always wondered but been to embaressed to ask!
Posted by: muris Nov 8 2007, 08:26 PM
Hi Matt
It's like part of a real amp(where channels, drive, clean,EQs are) but without power section.
So you need some power amp to use it live
while it works great in direct recording option.
And this one has MIDI so you can store like 123 sounds,
8 channel modes-from soft clean to Nu-Metal stuff,5 12ax7 tubes etc.
Can't wait to put my hands on it tho!!

+1 but just to add that the preamp needs some form of frequency compensation/speaker simulation and load on the line out - without which you could blow the tubes. Most preamps have this but not all.

Tony

Very good point Tony,as always.
This one has 2 types of outputs, one for power amp and another one for direct recording.
Without these, cab simulator is truly needed.

Matt, your AC15 already has a preamp built in - this would be kind of overkill, though if you have an effects loop you can plug one in there and bypass the AC15 preamp entirely.
I have to admit that I am not convinced there is much of a difference between a preamp and some multifx units in terms of what they do, except I imagine that preamps such as Muris' have very specific voicings to get a killer sound whereas multi fx are designed to be neutral (until you add amp and cab modelling). Can anyone throw some light on this?

Assuming that we're talking about rack multis like g major/force, eventide eclipse then I'd say you're pretty much right Andrew. A pre like Muris's lovely new Triaxis will be specifically designed to be able to reproduce various Mesa amps - and others. I'm guessing a bit but I'm sure it can do a great Mark 1 and 2 and a Dual/Triple Rec. Quite a few high end pre's have tube circuitary along with state of the art electronics for midi etc.
Something like a G Force may have some preamp programmes but they'll be a digital emulation and passed through a digital circuit. To my way of thinking a quality rack multi effects really excels usually at things like time and modulation type effects like reverb, echo, chorus and flanging etc. For eq and compression my preference there would be to a separate rack eq and rack compressor generally. (Anyone mention Neve
.)
There's of course one or two multis like the Eclipse that can also do eq and compression well though:
Daer Santi,

Awesome, Mesa is a great company.
Great preamp Muris. Great company indeed. There are just a couple of stores in Houston that handle their products. I got jacked around by two of them. I write a letter to Randy Smith - the president/founder of Mesa. He calls me on the phone to make things right. I ended up buying a Mesa Tremoverb off of ebay and Randy had a great customer rep from Mesa call me. They sent me a complete set of new Mesa tubes for my used Tremoverb - and these are not cheap. Absolutely amazing. When will it arrive Muris? We are waiting to hear it.
Posted by: muris Nov 12 2007, 06:46 AM
Thanks.
It shall arrive in few weeks I hope.
And Smith is awesome guy, founder of many cool features regarding to tube world.
Odd he had to leave Mesa and start his own company.
But still Randall amps are great,it's just that Mesa is more famous I believe.

Not sure of preamp/sound section but I guess all 8 are awesome

Gonna post some sound clips for sure.

So I finally managed this power issue and got proper voltage converter,100watts!!
And since I http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=10716&st=0 practice Marcus's Neoclassical lesson I recorded one take,
this piece is fast as hell, there are tons of mistakes I did
but here it is anyhow
Lavendel_Lesson_Triaxis_Clip.mp3 ( 355.92K )
: 268
Now,I recorded it dry since I haven't got G-Force yet but among efxs
like chorus, reverb, delay etc I'm missing Noise Reduction a lot atm!.
You know I like pretty heavy sound here and there
and I get bit of noise when I dial turbo high-gain settings
so I used about 50-60% of gain,to keep it clear.
And it is LD2 yellow mode, not heaviest one.
This piece of gear is real machine, clean sounds are just amazing tho,
will post more as soon as possible!!!

Good question MickeM.
Yes, I got 110v version and first I did was getting power conditioner(adapter type).
It was 50watts strong (Triaxis needs 30watts tho) but it got hot too much.
Guess it wasn't 50wats strong after all, don't believe in everything they say.
Then I wanted to change tranformator INSIDE the unit but mission impossible,
220v trafo would be much bigger than current one and impossible to fit inside.
Mesa did really amazing job inside the box, take a loot at the photo,
too many things and all in just 1HE
And finally I got only tranformator 100wats strong to convert 220v to 110v.
We made a box for it and that's it.

So Muris enlighten me. How does this thing compare to a tube amp head? You can use this live right? What functions as compared to a head does this not serve, or does it serve in addition to. Just curious O.O

Well, you can use it for gig if you are going straight into mixer/PA system.
These two units together don't have "amp" section,
so if you wanna play it on guitar cab, then you need power amp.
Comparing to tube head....as I said,no amp section but there are millions of sounds, midi supported.

Figuring you've played on a good tube amp before, how are the dynamics when playing it? Like the response a tube amp would have. Some seem a little too artificial when playing and make you have to almost alter your timing/technique etc. to sound right. Also, can you just plug guitar into triaxis and use headphones right from triaxis?

Ok,this is how it's all routed.
Guitar into Triaxis,fx loop to G-Force and back, then with "recording" outputs into audio card.
There are 2 recording outputs(reasonable) so you can plug headphones there.
I haven't and I wouldn't cause I plug my headphones into PC where whole sound in patched, same deal.
You would need converter jacks for that, female stereo into 2 male mono jacks.
About feel, once more, there is no "amp" section here, only preamp.
BUT feel is amazing,nonetheless.

This G-Force is space shuttle
It took me more than an hour to actually send signal into it from Triaxis
Sooo many options,I'm acting lika a kid atm
Took a pic with my cell, sorry for bad quality
P.S. Still having some noise, gonna clean tube sockets tomorrow
Now a G-force too! Congratulations on your great setup now!

Hi Muris,
I am curious about your basic Triaxis settings. Do you use the presets or do you have created new sets?
regards Michael

Hi Michael.
Presets are usually not of great use
cause each of us plays on different guitar, amp, cab etc.
So I create each sound individually
but not from zero,I take some preset which sounds
closer to what I'm looking for and then I edit it.

Hi again Muris
do you connect your midi foot-control to your Triaxis with connection "midi thru" to G-Force "midi in" or directly to G-force. Which way do you find is the best?

Most stupid question: What is a pre amp?

I go to MIDI IN on Triaxis and then via MIDI THRU to G-Force.
But I guess it'd be the same if I connect it otherwise,
G-Force and then Triaxis.
