Greetings

My name is Attila and I've been playing guitar for about 2.5 years so a progressing beginner. The genre I'm looking for is more on the progressive side of metal. If I was to pick one band or has to be Nevermore

I'm using Schecter jl 7fr (coincidence? )
as for amp I have an ht5 metal but nowdays I mainly use bias fx

I'm not really into covers but learning how more skilled songwriters put their songs together helps me with my own writing

I would really love to learn this godless endeavor but for me it is not an easy task to learn it by ear so I hope I can get some directions here

So that's about it I guess wheres my freebies biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Hi Attila! Nice to meet you here. Welcome to GMC!! smile.gif

We have really cool lessons covering Progressive Metal bands and concepts. I recommend you to start by checking our lessons here:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/video-les...al-progressive/

Regarding composition, I think that analysing our favourite composers tracks and then trying to apply the concepts learnt to our own compositions is the way to go. I can help you with this.

Knowing about music theory also helps and complements those analysis. What do you know about theory?

Thank you very much I'm going to check it out definitely

As for your questions I do understand a little bit of theory such as modes and different scales (harmonic minor being my favourite alongside diminished)
I dont have memorized all the notes on the fret board but I can pretty much find out fairly easy
I'm familiar with different types of notes and feels like 8th notes or triplets

Playing scales and sweep picking is my stronger side legato and tapping requires more work

I'm trying to write more progressive riffs while still using 4/4 time signature (since I cant really program drums yet and my ez drummer skills are limited:D )

I lack quite a bit of skills when it comes to chords pretty much because on heavy distortion you really need 3 strings the most, but is definitely something I want to work on

I also play a bit of piano so maybe a dream theatre clone in the future however I like to add a little bit of spice in form of neoclassical sound.

So in theory I'm not too bad it's just the practice to be able to apply it in action

I apologise for the long thread

Great mate! I think that you have a very good base. It's time to continue polishing your skills. We also have a lot of neoclassical lessons. One thing that is helpful is to also learn the theory behind GMC lessons. You can learn how to play them, but you'll get much more if you analyse the chord progressions and note choices.

Have you ever heard Symphony X? They are like Dream Theater but they incorporate a lot of neoclassical stuff. I think that you could learn a lot by analysing their music (theory and arrangements).

Yes! cool.gif But I unfortunately find it hard to give you any general pointers for learning Godless Endeavor...because I suck at that kind of fast metal riffing.

Maybe you have something else you need help with?

I was going through them and I found definitely some very good ones
I'm trying to learn this song and than I will have a bit more time I found actually some old lesson from Attila Voros who I had a chance to have a lesson with so that is already very useful for me.

I have a very long way to go yet hahah

Its actually really easy my trick for quick metal riffing (a game changer)
Whatever song you learn even the fastest of fastest
Easy find the guitar pro version and all you need to do is to put it like on 25% of the actual speed like I do, than is really easy

But yeah it is very hard I even struggle with the riffs I wrote myself biggrin.gif

Well for some people that method is more than enough - provided your technique when playing slowly will convert to higher speeds.
