...when it comes to tuning your guitar. Which way (how) do you choose to tune it and may I ask why?

I bought a book when I bought my guitar and it includes a CD with some tutorials, as well as tuning sounds from a piano. I mean: the piano sound of E-B-G-D-A-E. The guy in the shop did a grace tune-over for me, but how can I be certain the guitar is in perferct pitch? The way I do it now (for now) is playing the piano note, and then strumming the string and try to listen if its ok. I also got a tuning device with the guitar, but that is to me more guidance than the ultimate solution, because the damn "light-thingy-indicator" is never actually only green.

It depends on the tuner but it should be only in the green light.
You have some nice devices that are very very accurate but they are a little more expensive. I always recommend the Boss-Tu 60 (I think that's the model), is the one that has a needle instead of lights. Of course you have the rack tuners that are really precise too.
But overall I think you're doing a great job by tuning it by ear because is a really nice way to get your ear to do it right. On the other hand once you've done that I think is cool to have some device to check with.
I forgot to mention that you have some software that maybe could help you, I know one that's called "PitchPerfect".

I hope this helps you wink.gif

If you are beginning player, it may be, that you just struck your strings too hard, so it vibrates too much or you just pluck it too fast - or you have bad strings, or bad tuner smile.gif

Btw. I use the tuner on my Pod:) Those things are accurate as hell. But to train your ear, I advise you, to just tune one string (using 12th fret harmonic - the note name is the same, since its perfect octave) and then tune the rest of the strings using the 5th fret method (if you dont know what it is, PM me, or just ask here in this thread:) I will answer you specifically)

The tuner device I got is a Morgan Chromatic GT-1. (I think it's ..rather of poor quality, the one the guy in the shop used had a needle...)
Hm..Oh well, there is so much more on the guitar which is new to me as well. For instance ... I'm not sure how to screw on my wammybar. Do I need it for know? I feel its enough to get my pinky to reach nearly any fret at all *haha*

PitchPerfect you say.

Well its really easy:) Maybe you know the notes on open strings - EADGBE (from lower tone to higher tone) and maybe you also know all the notes A,A#,B,C,C#,D,D#,E,F,F#,G,G#,A,A#....... right 'till the neverend

Now to the method:
1) Choose one of your strings (for this example, you take the lowest sounding, fattest E string) and tune it (for now just open string, dont hold any fret)
2) When it is in tune, play 5th fret (it is usually marked with dot, claw or some other painting. The second with painting, the 3rd fret being the first... say if you dont understand - i dont know what kind of beginner you are smile.gif)
and tune your A string, so that the 5th fret on E string is the exactly same note, as the open A string.
3) apply this to 5th fret on A - open D string, 5th fret on D string - open G string, 4th fret on G string - open b string, 5th fret on B string - open e string
4) if done properly - voilá, you are done:)

If you still dont understand, check video from Ivan or Andrew about tuning a guitar or basic steps.. Or just say me and I will record a video for you with more precise explanation wink.gif Dont be shy in anyway smile.gif

Ah there may be a problem you are not aware of - you guitar has a whammy bar which makes tuning sometimes a bit of a challenge. When you tune one string, you're other strings will likely go out of tune so you have to repeat the tuning of each string until they are all pretty much tuned. You get used to it after a while.

As a beginner, I would advise not using the whammy bar too often (tends to put the strings out of tune depending on the quality of the guitar).

Hope this helps! Good luck.

Thanks! Jup, that helps. I was wondering if I should screw the whammy on at all...so, I'll just leave it for now.

I usually tune with this small tuner I bought for about $15 and then I plug my guitar into my mixer and tune it again in my GTR software because I find my actual tuner seems to be a bit off from what the GTR software tuner gives me, I don't know which one to believe, so I usually go with what the tuner in GTR says because, afer all, my tuner is pretty cheap laugh.gif

Probably the tuner is too sensitive. Don't worry, just tune it so that it is on green light often and it will be OK. Check out my tuning tutorial as well for some tips:

When tuning aim for note to be in the very middle as soon as you pick your open string ! After that, as string vibrates, the arrow will move left and right as well which is pretty useless for us from then on smile.gif

Yeah we tune every day even every song or two we play on stage. Some guitars stay in tune better then others but you should check the tuning before every practice session/gig and also during them if you feel its going out of tune.

Tuning the guitar before recording, practicing, playing of any kind is important, so yes, you have to prepare the instrument for play every time you take it in your hands. Make a habit of checking the tuning every time before playing, and it will be OK. When the guitar is out of tune even by a notch, it can sound awful for the audience/listener.

i think it is really easy to tune your low e string (maybe with a proper tuner, or just by ear), then you pretty much just play the 5th fret on the low E string and play open on the A string, then you tune your A so it sounds like the E string, do the same thing with the D, G and high E. BUT when your tuning the B string you have to use the fourth fret on the G string enstead of the 5th.
sorry if that confused u at all, just tryin to help smile.gif

laugh.gif Yesterday I discovered a hole at the end of the tuner device!!
I thought: hey - *of course a lightbulb moment* - maybe the amplifier cord could fit there.
Doh! and of course:
Hahaha! laugh.gif

Jup, every day since March 11th I have tuned my EL-guitar without it beeing plugged in at all! laugh.gif
It makes a HUGE difference now (hehe) and I seem to be able to hit the green light easier...
Thats also how I realized that I never introduced my amplifier. I'm so sorry about that.
smile.gif

Here it is though.

As you can see Line 6.
I still discover new sounds and levels of insanity playing with the nobs on it...
I proabably havent turned it right even, but at the stage I'm at I'll just have to go with what I find pleseant to the ear.
Some of the echo is toooooo much, but I have this feeling that there must be a setting that makes it more easy to let the notes I hit hang in the air, for and longer. ?!

Oh, and here is the guitar and my old metronome.

So there you have it: my first guitar, ever.

Just for practice and mostly everything I just play in standard tuning but lately I have been playing some Drop-D stuff and some C stuff. Trying to get that Bullet for my Valentine meets Children of Bodom sound with a pinch of Paul Gilbert.
