GMC Forum _ Collaborations _ The Big Gmc Collab!

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Aug 6 2010, 08:40 PM

As you have probably seen, we (the instructors) did a collab which turned out pretty cool (check it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0NFOiuMKCc).

Now the time has come to make an even cooler one!

This time around we want everyone to participate! Students, instructors, moderators, ninjas and dogs (etc). The plan is to showcase the diversity of styles we have got at GMC. When we are done with the mix I will put together a video which hopefully will get more youtube views than the last one (~50k and counting). So in a way this can be seen as a competition where the winners get to be featured in a video watched by tens of thousands, playing with some of the best guitarists out there. Not so bad, huh?!

So who "wins"? -The ones with the most musical and unique takes (according to my taste...). So let's get rolling:
--------------------------

BACKINGS
 big_collab_bt.mp3 ( 8.16MB ) : 3692

 big_collab_bt_drums_only.mp3 ( 8.16MB ) : 3223

('Drums only' are for those of you want to get really crazy.)

BPM: 135
Tonality: A minor and E minor, the outro is in E major (N.B. Tune down to Eb)

My take:

You can try the following scales if you are using standard tuning.

B major / Ab minor / Ab minor pentatonic
you can also try
Eb minor / Eb minor pentatonic

If you are using Eb tuning (like me)

C major / A minor / A minor pentatonic
you can also try
E minor / E minor pentatonic
--------------------------

RULES

Start date Friday August 13th. Takes uploaded prior to this date will be removed, this is because we want everyone to have "fresh" ears when recording their takes. We don't really have a collab deadline - I will notify in advance when I think we are starting to get enough takes.

Video requirement - that's right. The end result will be a video, so I need to know that people who submit an audio take can also record a video (not valid for instructors). You can either link to an old rec take of yours or record a new video. But you need to provide evidence of your video capabalities when submitting your audio take(s). The easiest way is of course if you record audio and video at the same time.

Audio
The idea is that anyone may have a go at any part(s) and then I will do my best to glue it all together. All styles, speeds and instruments accepted.

Please send me all takes starting from "point 0" on the backing - to make it easier for me to mix this. You can upload the mp3 here or send me the wave file for optimal quality ([email protected] - please use rapidshare.com or yousendit.com)

Please do not use any reverb at all - this way I can apply the same reverb to all takes to make the mix sound more unison.
--------------------------

I am personally having a blast with this backing - and expect to not only participate in this collab but also record a complete song of my own with it (most of it is actually already done! wink.gif ). I hope many people will enjoy the backing so we can get a lot of participants.

So what are you waiting for - join the fun! biggrin.gif

EDIT: COLLAB NOW FINISHED, HERE IS THE RESULT:

Well Vaidya - if you do an attempt you will either

1) get into the final mix - everyone is happy! Or...

2) not get into the final mix - but learn a heck of a lot while trying, everyone is still happy!

So in other words you have got absolutely nothing to loose! wink.gif

Posted by: Vaidya Aug 6 2010, 08:53 PM

Hmm,yeah,i'll probably learn a lot if I make an attempt.Maybe i'll give it a shot.

The backing track is written to suit my original song idea. You only need to play over a part of it (if you want to).

Depending on what kind of takes we get, we could make it shorter, longer or even split it up into two different tracks.

Yes if your take makes it to the final mix we must have a video from you!

Can't wait! If the last one is any indication, this one is going to be AMAZING!

The start has a Funky POLKA feel to it! It's very light hearted and should be loads of fun.

Wow, Kris... another collab ! Even crazier than the last one, haha... you sure do keep us on our toes and like to push us out of our comfort zones musically, which is a good thing ;-)

I look forward to seeing whatever I can come up with... and stoked that everybody can participate.. There will be some amazing ideas from everyone I'm sure !! :-)

Good to hear you will give at shot Ben - I know you will raise the quality of the whole collab!

I was a little hesitant about the backing since the polka think is pretty far from rock n roll - but since I got lots of ideas from it figured others might as well...!

I can't miss this one!
great bts Kris!

It can be as long or short as you would like it to be - just four well placed notes might work very well!

Awesome - Chris you are the man!! biggrin.gif This is excellent, melody is all over it and you used the intro break in a very clever way. This will be a killer collab - can't wait to hear what more contributions we get.

Good to hear Chris. It struck after posting this thread that the backing probably is pretty weird - I don't know why but it seemed natural to me (and I have never listened to polka!!)

However judging from your comment - it seems I did the right thing if it gets people thinking in new directions.

Can't wait to hear your other takes!

if you check my take, I chose the heavy metal riff to do it. It's in Ebm that part, so yeah, I actually used Ebm pentatonic

Some very cool stuff in there Todd - please send the track, I need to fiddle around with the different takes for a while before I can determine what will work.

Also best is if you can send me a fairly unprocessed guitar track. Last time I had problems with your take in the mix - I think it was because the sound was "scooped". It works very well for the metal sound but a midrange poor sound is hard for me to fit in the mix.

Sorry I should of course have mentioned something about this!

You can try the following scales if you are using standard tuning.

B major / Ab minor / Ab minor pentatonic
you can also try
Eb minor / Eb minor pentatonic

If you are using Eb tuning (like me)

C major / A minor / A minor pentatonic
you can also try
E minor / E minor pentatonic

Posted by: Daniel Realpe Aug 30 2010, 04:45 PM

nice take! that's a whacky guitar!

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 30 2010, 10:45 PM

KRISTOPHER:
Thanks smile.gif I'll send the track today. Sorry about the massive "scoop", I typically do quite a bit of scooping out the mids as I do play a lot of metal. I didn't think how much of a pain it would be to mix in without any midrange. I'll "unscoop" this one and pull off as much processing as possible.

DANIEL:
Yeah it's a bit of a wacky instrument, It's a "Fretlight Guitar" It has LEDs built in to the frets. I lit up the Eb Minor Scale while I was soloing. Once you know your scales it's just a cool effect, but when learning it can be a handy tool smile.gif

HERE IS MY TAKE
*File starts at 0:00 and my take starts at 1:28 so it should lay in to your DAW and just work.
*Stereo Mp3 320kps
*No Delay or Reverb although I Have my mac farther back from the amp so it does sound like the room.
*Unscooped so there is actually some midrange

So Todd, do you think that Fretlight guitar is any good? Or is more a gimmick than anything else?

I must say I was skeptical at first and when I got it, it did need a setup. But I must say after using it for a bit I think it's an amazing teaching/learning tool. Some folks (mostly hard core purists, God bless'em) think it's "cheating" to use a tool like the fretlight. I'd say those folks should skip it. But I really wish this was around when I was first learning all my scales and the neck, it would have sped things up a bit.

if you are a visual learner, this kind of thing can be a big help especially at first. Also, they are working on software that will let me record a lesson, and the student goes to the web site and plugs in their guitar and the frets light up in sequence as to what I want them to play. Spiff smile.gif

To be completely open about it, I'm endorsed by Fretlight. But I went to them, not the other way around. I really wanted to see if the guitar was worth bothering with. I must say I'm convinced. Although it's NOT a stage or studio level pro guitar, it's a very handy tool that I have a lot of fun teaching and playing with.

Great playing there, Todd... you've a very natural, relaxed legato style there... excellent !

Thanks smile.gif I went 180 degrees away from alternate picking the heck out of it as I am often tempted to do as I love to alternate pick. This is a really great collab and I can't wait to hear how it turns out! It's soooooo far outside normal with the contrasting polka/metal thing that it really strikes me as brilliant and or crazy, or both!

I was really busy this month with gigs and everything, but I managed to work on a short take. Didn't have a clear idea on what to play, so I hope this short improvisation will be cool. I must confess it was hard for me to play over the whole track cause the chords changed in a very strange way, so I've chosen the "easiest" part for me smile.gif The country part is great tho, but just didn't quite managed to play and blend all the parts effectively in the solo.

Wow! That guitar looks really nice, just like your playing!
But, would the LED's have a cooler effect without the computer lights behind them?
I mean if you turn a few degrees that the LED's are only surrounded by darkness?

@ Kris and Daniel
Thanks for the tips. Much appreciated.
I'll try to play something over the backing.
If I find something ok I'll record it (if I find some recording tools).

Also I love the fact that there is both growling and clean in there - definitely my favorite type of singing! biggrin.gif Awesome!

Please send me the guitars-vocals-only file!

Thanks a lot for your take Ivan - a lot of cool stuff to use here.

I have also got two killer takes from Marius Pop and Ben - I am very excited to get mixing now as we are starting to get a good amount of content!

Hi Kris,
though I am intimidated (like most students, as it looks?) by the killer takes of the instructors I improvised a bit today and shot a video for the whole BT. There are quite a few mistakes, but maybe you can use some of the things I've done. Would be cool for sure!

Thanks so much for posting this Chris - I think you put your heart into this one and I am quite sure we will use parts of it. Also it was an excellent idea to record rhythm guitars - it's a very natural way to fit even more people in the tune.

So PLEASE PLEASE - if you are a student - give this collab a shot! We don't need flashy stuff just solid melodies or rhythm guitar - anything will do! You don't have anything to loose!

I have started mixing this but I am waiting for Lian's killer track as I think it will play an important role (can't get his melodies out of my head!)

Yes... I agree with Kris.... students DO please get involved too... it's a brilliant way to give yourself a new challenge and also it reminds us all what guitar playing and music in general is all about - having fun, joining in with other players from different backgrounds/styles, inspiring each other...

Never feel anyone is better than you.. after all, when we all pick up our guitars.. we are all students and we never stop learning whether your name is Steve Vai or Yngwie.. we all have so much to learn and so much further to go !

Amazing playing Ivan, I really enjoyed that.... you've got some crazy left hand ideas and ability.. love it !!

Well, inspired by Gitarrero's bravery I decided to record a take today. My better guitar is in the shop now and I'm going to get it back soon and record another take with that one, because the guitar I used goes out of tune really easily and I think it went out of tune in the take. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't left out of this one.

I used the ending section in my solo because I haven't heard anybody else use it, but if Kris has a big finale planned I can do a new solo in a different spot, no big deal.

Please give me some feedback so I can change it and do another better take!

Excellent! One could tell you had a melodic "red thread" through out this take. The only place I felt you were into too deep was at 00:08. The arpeggio idea is really cool - but it's not played convincingly.

Please send me the guitar only file so I can experiment with your take! You can either send it as it is (and I will see if I can find a work around for the 08 spot - ie by cutting in someone else there) or record again.

All in all we should be able to use your take, though! ( But I cant tell 100% until I have got your file though)

TO EVERYONE - WHAT WE NEED:

We need more takes over the polka section. Give it a shot!

Ok I have a first draft for you!

A few comments - I think everyone got their spot except for Jitty. Jitty did a good job with his solo and would have made if it hadn't been for the fact that he chose to play over the choruses where we had some really strong takes already - which I prioritized for the sake of the whole tune.

I am a very big fan of Lian's work and would have loved to hear his singing all over the tune - I ended up putting his vocals on the last chorus simply because I wanted Gabriel on the first chorus (to have the shreddiest stuff at the end) and Lian's and Gabriel's stuff didn't blend too well. However you will notice Lian appears in the background on all choruses.

The most popular spot was the stick after the first chorus - and I managed to squeeze everyone in by playing two different takes simultaneously and hard pan them. I think it created a really cool contrast.

Bear will noticed I sliced his take up quite badly! =D Also if there are takes in there you don't recognize it's Ben Higgins at 0:17 and Marius Pop at 02:17 and the last chorus.

I personally think we achieved a fantastic blend of styles in here - and find the tune to be much more than just a guitar show off.

This is just a draft mix so any comments you have got are appreciated. Also I ask you to please start sending me video - preferably as high quality mp4 as possible! I feel that this video will be something truly special and can't wait to get it up at youtube and GMC frontpage.

Posted by: maharzan Sep 19 2010, 12:35 PM

Overall it sounds awesome. The start is bashing and creates the excitement to want to listen to.. I kind of thought the mid section (where the polka part is) was missing something. It felt a bit empty compared to what started out (heavy distortion and solos). and it seemed to have been prolonged (many of those slow (non heavy) takes made it to this space) so probably didn't blend well together for a overall song or kind of pushed brakes in there? Just my thought.

Posted by: Gitarrero Sep 19 2010, 01:00 PM

Hi Kris,
I think the overall mix sounds great. Just had the impression that my rhythm take in the polka part has a very low volume. It's perfectly normal that the solo that is played over it is louder, but maybe you can raise the volume just a little...smile.gif

Oh my sad.gif It's a shame you didn't submit it earlier - the take rocks! Unfortunately the collab is closed - but there will be a new one after this one so no worries.

Count me in man!!

Here is my video, got a special guest in it...

And here is the downloadable file (no sound in this one):

laugh.gif hehe love the mouse! (I hope it was intentional)

If I am not mistaken we are waiting for Chris Evans' and Ben Higgins' videos - when I have got those I will start video editing as soon as I get some free time!

Haha! Actually, it's a dwarf hamster (see, no long tail, looks liek a miniature bear), his name is Homer and yes, it was intentional. He's always really curious and my guitar always catches his interest (as you can see).

me cannot wait either smile.gif

Posted by: Chris Evans Sep 30 2010, 09:49 PM

Hi Kris, sorry for the delay in getting this vid posted.

Had a lot of problems with sync/quality etc!! I ended up having to do it in .wmv to get some quality at least, was totally unable to sync the backing to it but did record a single guitar audio at the same time so you will be able to sync with the main backing.

I need another new vid camera!!!!! argh!

I know I am an impatient man.. knock knock!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Oct 7 2010, 01:59 PM

I don't blame you wink.gif

The current status is that I have improved the audio mix working with levels and eq - there was lots of low ends buzzying things up.

I have started synchronizing/aligning the videos and encountered some problems in the cases I had to use flv files, but nothing unsolvable!
