Someone here had a post with this guy and a kfc hat on his head, so I had to find out who the hell that was?

I just watched a video on youtube

http://youtube.com/watch?v=pytlmRmxZkA

I'm gonna have to watch more now, I was kind of shocked...and yes I've probably been under a rock, an acoustic rock...

I like Bucketheads phrasing alot. Sounds awkward at some points and has a real exotic feel. Anyone know what keys and scales he plays in ?

Noone who is technically better than Buckethead writes better songs than him, that pretty much seals the deal for me. He's got versatility and musical knowledge up there with the best of the jazz players.
I can't think of any other guitarists who can write and play in so many different genres and be a master of all of them.

That said, I have one problem with him. When improvising shred live ( just about every solo he plays live is improvised) he brings out the same lick he stole from Paul Gilbert over and over, if you've seen enough Buckethead videos you know which one I 'm talking about. It's a great lick but come on, some moderation would be in order, especially when he's got soooooo many great things he knows and could play instead. I just don't get it. tongue.gif

There are plenty of guitarists out there that could do the same thing as Buckethead. I'm not trying to go against you here its just that its the truth.

Hmm... I'm not a big fan of Buckethead, while I know he's talented (and better than I will be in a million years... partly because I'll be dead... blink.gif OK, better than I will be in 30 years!), he just doesn't seem very musical in my opinion. I don't really enjoy his music, and if you're going just for technical skill, then there's Vai, Satriani, Gilbert, all of whom seem (to me) to be much better musicians, and much more skilled. But that's just my thinking...

That may be so, but I sure haven't seen any. Please point me to someone who has released entire albums in different styles (Buckethead has albums that are entirely blues, acoustic, death/thrash/heavy metal, funk, shred, electronic, jazz, and tons of stuff that are just weird and probably great although I don't get it) while mastering the composing and playing styles of everything listed above and making it interesting to listen to, and at the same time being able to shred Buckethead's pants off. If I've missed someone like this I shall color myself surprised.

Wow... I did not know that. I guess I'll have to check out some more of his stuff. That's amazing that he hasn't limited himself to one genre like most do, I've only heard his more "metal/shred"ish stuff (for lack of a better word), I'll have to look some more of his stuff up...

Good call, I'll give you some tips right now, check them out depending on what you'd like

Population override - slow, mellow blues/funk rock straight out of the 1970s

Colma - Buckethead wrote this album for his mom so she had something she could listen to when she was in the hospital for a while, it's all acoustic guitars and beautiful.

Pepper's Ghost - One of his latest albums, it's a rock record with some great tunes and more diverse than the previous two.

He's also releasing 3 new CDs today and I can't wait to check them out. I hope this song is on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9aY2CLrGx4

Not very musical? I cannot think of anyone more musical !! biggrin.gif This guy is no one trick pony!!
Not only can he shred clean at a face frying tempo, but the variation in his music is almost unheard of for an artist! smile.gif He covers anything from metal to blues, rock, fusion, beautifuly haunting acoustic albums etc

From the Album "Comla" for Mum

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJud5kqFEDU

Check out the equisit phrasing half way through this video "Final Wars"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hxi8sXjDUY

A fantastic new untitled song which is essentaial a rock song, really progesses well towards the end

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9aY2CLrGx4

"Padmasana" from the album "Eletric Tears" which i highly recommend

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-2w9b8i7GU

And last but not least probably one of the mose awsome versions of Soothsayer, this is shred at its most face frying tempo! Watch out for the slick sweep-tapping when he lets rip blink.gif

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veFLvVMTCBA

I hope you enjoy these! And remember, music is a very personal thing so one mans delight is another mans dislike. I try to appreciate all players as there are so many good ones.

Its just for me, Buckethead is right up there ! wink.gif

P.S check out those recommendations above!

Hmm, he is pretty good. I still don't think he's all that amazing, but I have a much better impression of him now than from the other videos of him that I've seen. The acoustic stuff is especially awesome, I don't particularly like his tone on most of the others, but his playing is great.

Alex Skolnick for example, and I didn't mean people who have done that, i'm saying there are plenty of guitarists who are capable. Yngwie could do anything haha.

I've never played any guitar hero game ever, but I read that one of Buckethead's songs , (Jordon), is on guitar hero II in a locked mode? I've seen the video of him playing it on youtube with that killswitch on his les paul, I was blown away...

Oh come on, everything Yngwie does sounds the same, if you've heard one of his songs you've heard them all, more or less.

Also to clarify, I didn't say Buckethead was the greatest at everything, far from it. He definitely can't play neoclassical like Yngwie, can't shred like Paul Gilbert, and so on. If everything you ever wanted to listen to was the harmonic minor scale played up and down in triplets at 200 bpm, you'd probably consider Yngwie number one.

Yeah, Jordan is the hardest song in GH2, you should be able to find the version that's in the game and has the crazy crazy solo pretty easily on youtube.

Buckethead is the best at playing his music and yngwie is the best at playing his music tongue.gif
I strongly disagree with a claim that someone is the best in a genre.

Absolutley, Music is an artform not to be compared between artists in my humble opinion! smile.gif

Yngwie is good at what Yngwie does, Buckethead is good at What Buckethead does and so on wink.gif
