I´ve played a lot more a couple of days then I use to. And now the indexfinger nail is splitted. (like the nails is diveded in layers.. And the first one close to the flesh is lose.) Anyone know how to avoid this? Proper nail cutting or something? It takes days before stuff like that before it´s "healed"... And if you´re unlucky it might take weeks if you´re taking away the splitted piece by force. One time it just would go away, because it was to deep.. Man, blood was flooding tongue.gif

Anyways, not that big of a deal right now.. My fingers are really soar after a lot playing so I should rest anyways... But what if I were to have a gig tomorrow... Ouch..? Thoughts on this?

I've never had this problem. It sounds like you're playing too hard, not resting enough. How about some pics though, sounds interesting biggrin.gif

its not a big problem the best way to long your nail quickly and strongly.make a rhythm by ticking nails on table many times in the day.thats i do it every days many times and you can see my nails in my videos

laugh.gif asking for gory pictures are you? Couldn't agree more biggrin.gif

No, I never had that problem and I never heart of anyone having it before either.
Have you got weak nails, press down too darn hard or actually play with the nail or what?

A little hand and nail care never hurt anyone smile.gif

Get yourself a good hand and nail moisturizer and make sure to moisturize around your nails and cuticles. This will help also if your prone to dry skin and hang nails. Then use clear nail polish, I know I know, however it will add a bit of strength to your nails. You could even just put on your fretting hand until your nails become stronger. But you shouldn't have to use polish forever as the more you use a hand cream your nails should get stronger on their own.

Kinda girly I know but everyone should moisturize smile.gif

hehe.. Sometimes I use non-fat handcream at work since I put on those blue "doctors gloves" all the time. And they are filled with some kind of white powder. I don´t think I can take those kind of macro pictures with any camera I own.. I did not find any at google either. But it´s like a thin fragment at the top, like under the nail, closest the the flesh. Sometimes I get it on my right hand too. Usually when involved with some kind of monotome working.

I bite my nails, maby that makes them fragile, uneven...? My nails are hard and grows pretty fast in general.

yea dude, i think u're going full on smile.gif

taking your nail apart by force is definitely not going to help. Yes, nail cutter is a good idea smile.gif

Think u're pressing the strings too hard. Try pressing by the tip of your finger and not the nail by itself.

my nails dont even touch the strings when i play, maybe somethins lacking in my technique. blink.gif

I have the same problem with right hand index finger nail!!
All other nails are just fine and strong but this one is really weak
and it breaks and splits soo easily.
Not sure but I guess it has something with lacking of vitamins or som.
I really smoke too much and I hold cigar with index and middle fingers
but middle finger nail is just fine blink.gif

I have a problem with my right index nail too. I play with a pick tho, and the nail somehow comes in contact with the strings, and then it gets damaged. My only solution is to cut it short always and often.

I didn't had this problem before , but I do have problem when playing finger style and cutting the flesh around my index finger particulary when slapping...When I do it I have to wait for it to heal and it takes some time...it really puts me out of commission..So be aware when practicing and at first signs of "injury" stop and continue next day.. wink.gif

Probably Rokchik gave the best advice, about the things man usually don't care... tongue.gif

I have the same problem on index finger and I have a different problem on middle finger. My nail there always has a "hole" in the place I use for finger picking in acoustic guitar... blink.gif I can see that the problem will persist for a long time as the nail is already broken all the way down...

Thanks Gus smile.gif wink.gif

As for your problem if it's on your picking hand it could just be a wearing down due to the repetitive movement. As Vinod suggested, lots of classical guitarist use artificial nails when they play. Maybe an option for you as it doesn't sound like it's a brittle nail or split nail issue.

I had this problem right now... Its hurt very very much and
I good some blood to. I know now why that happends.

First I talk to Marcus because I use one of his lesson at this day and I tryed his bend and it works .. but
after some hours I stop playing and got big ouch damnit. Now I didnt play guitar for 2 days mad.gif
(AT my playing I didnt realise any hurt on my finger )

So now Im thinking alot of that and the first Ive tryed are new strings. (I played with 11)
Now I buy 9 or 10 and hope that will help.

The other thing is, marcus give a tip to play in top of a mirror or record with a cam.
So I record my playing and be shocked after I see the video. I dont bend the strings alone laugh.gif
When I make a bend then I push very strong on the fretboard too
(Hmm how can I xplain that..)
Ok take one finger maybe the Index right now and push him strong on your table..
And NOW push the finger strong foward too. When you do this again and again,
your nail tear from you finger.
So not the nails are the problem. Its just the playing. (By me!!)

So my result is... Play relaxed and look what you do. Dont push strong on the strings.

I hope this will help and wish you luck.

Thx!

All errors are planned. If you should find one, keep him. tongue.gif
