GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Prince

Posted by: MickeM Apr 3 2009, 10:35 AM

it's not often I turn my head to watch a band perform on tv but I just saw Prince perform on the Jay Leno show and he was ripping licks like Hendrix himself would. He was just brilliant !!!!!

Then walked off the stage and handed his guitar to some lucky guy in the audiensce biggrin.gif

Either way, I think I will have to dig into Prince's stuff to find if all his new stuff sounds this good. Don't know the song name though.

EDIT: Did some research. The song is from his newest album and it's called Dreamer

He's a genius, IMO smile.gif

Vastly underrated in terms of guitar playing, sometimes you have to look past the image to see the true talent, check out Purple Rain imo the best thing he ever wrote by far.

EDIT: Thats a funny looking strat hes playing there, wonder what model that is? Seems to have SC at neck and some kind of covered HB at bridge??

How about a funky Prince lesson? He really is a great guitar player.

Yea, Prince is very talented, but also very underrated.

I think that's the video where Prince gets the solo towards the end and just destroys it. I'll check back later because YouTube isn't working for me, so that might be the wrong link laugh.gif

Like said, he is very talented, multi-talented and very underestimated amongst the public.

Very good guitarist imo. Unfortunately, to most people, his appearance and character overshadow his talent. sad.gif Check him out live in 1983 performing "let's Go Crazy"...

I've never been much of his music, but there's no doubt that he's a mastermind at everything he does. He's a great drummer too.

I have to agree with what's been said here. Prince is highly underrated as a guitarist and his image certainly overshadows how brilliant he is on the ol' six string. He did the halftime show at the superbowl a few years ago and really showed his chops.

I've been a fan of Prince for a very long time and most of his songs have great guitar parts in them. Lots of great funk licks and some pretty great solos but unfortunately the synthesizer usually drowns them out a bit especially in stuff like "When Doves Cry" or "1999". "Let's go Crazy" has a pretty good solo in it.

yes I can only agree with everything here as well, I`m not a fan of his music but without doubt on clips that I have seens he is a great guitarist, I never actually realised this for a long time until a friend of mine showed me a video of a live show and he plays a guitar solo in it, I was really impressed!

Since we're on the topic of while my guitar gently weeps, I suggest to anyone who hasn't seen it check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkcPpnqd-ls&feature=related version with a great lineup including Paul Gilbert on guitar. My favorite version aside from the original smile.gif
