GMC Forum _ Kristofer Dahl _ German = English (my New Video)

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Mar 17 2009, 10:38 PM

I have been a little extra busy lately, trying to take my drivers license (pensioners and old people in Stockholm beware!)

However this weekend I finally managed to put a video together - it features my most recent metal song plus some provoking lies about the German language! laugh.gif tongue.gif

I also show the riffs of the song at the end of the video! Check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4DBJxX8-vAat youtube.

Thanks for watching! smile.gif

That's some chunky riffing biggrin.gif Great job laugh.gif

Posted by: Pavlov Mar 17 2009, 10:44 PM

That is pretty much the most hilarious thing I've seen all month, apart from "I like turtles zombie kid".

That was great, thanks.

Thanks - I always find my riffing very "untight" as soon as I sit down and try to record something...so these songs really help me shape my rhythm guitar skills...I need to practice for days to get it as tight as I want to!

I wish my german teacher taught me this song at school , I'm pretty sure I would had learned something, or at least to remember Mittwoch.

Posted by: Fran Mar 17 2009, 11:23 PM

Awesome Kris, couldn't stop laughing at the dancing, the faces & the hat laugh.gif, verses remind me of Friday I'm in Love (The cure), pretty funny & killer riffs.

I don't speak a word of german appart from "Zutaten" (It's written all over my biscuits), so if you hadn't subtitled that I'd have thought the song was about a nuclear armaggedon or something, german sounds so aggressive cool.gif

Pretty cool smile.gif

Hej Kris,

you're German is really schlecht ... regarding the fact that you've learned it for almost 6 years. biggrin.gif

Just kidding. It has some minor mistakes, but I think it fits perfectly.
Knowing Rammstein, somebody could think, you did it deliberately.

But hey, I think Rammstein itemized or listed almost everything in their songs, but for sure forgot weekdays.
Now you probably stole some future ideas.

Posted by: P.H Mar 17 2009, 11:31 PM

For me as an austrian (we also speak german), it's very funny to see you hop around while making one grammar mistake after another Chris biggrin.gif . But you really sound similar to Till Lindemann in my ears.

By the way:

Ist Deutsch in Schweden eine Pflichtsprache oder sowas wie ein Wahlpflichtfach? Netter Text übrigens!

Posted by: sigma7 Mar 17 2009, 11:41 PM

wow, id buy that, it was awesome, the lyrics were actually pretty dark, and i am serious

were u ever in a metal band?

Yes I have been a while back - but nothing too serious! (and back then I didn't sing)

I didn't understand the end ph34r.gif - but @ the beginning: Wahlpflichtfach! You had to choose at least one other language except for English, but not necessarily German!

Good observation - they really have lots of different themes covered!

Yes I really can't think of another language which would allow for these aggressive sounding phrases!

Yes this is a very good point - I have learned 10x more German by listening to Rammstein than during my 6 years at school, that's just...wrong!

We should learn from this when designing lessons for GMC as well.

Hehe great to hear you say this David - thanks!

Oh and talent in the sense "skilled" is is completley ok to me - it's the "natural" talent thing which I don't like! smile.gif
When someone tells me I have got "natural" talent I feel that it's an insult to my hard work - since I work all the time! rolleyes.gif

We all know that, and if anyone is in doubt, they should just look at GMC!

Wow Canis that's a great comment - I have worked very hard to improve my recordings. I realised that my recording chops were very week compared to others here. I'd love to share what I learned during the last year recording-wise (al though I still have A LOT to learn). Is there anything special you are wondering about, regarding the sound?

Hehe, you do indeed deserve the "Skill Talent" mark tongue.gif

Well, I have pretty much no skill whatsoever when it comes to proper recording. I just plug from my guitar to my amp, and from my amp to my line in, which results in a pretty boring, tame and dry tone. I guess part of it is my guitar which isn't exactly up to industry standard, but I was wondering how your studio "wiring*" goes?

*Don't know the actual industry-word for it, but I mean the "guitar -> amp -> line in" talk tongue.gif

You can get great result even with cheap guitars! My chain looks like this

guitar > amp > "red box" through speaker out on the amp > into computer sound card
however this setup would give just as good results:
guitar > pod > into computer sound card

Some additional things to help you fatten the sound:

* record at least two identical takes of a riff - and "hard pan" them left and right
* I also overdub with a synthesizer ("square lead", a pretty common synthesizer sound), you can do the same with strings or whatever synth sound you have. Mix the synthesizer so low that people don't really understand that it's a synthesizer that makes it so fat.

Other small tweaks which are important but don't really make it sound super-fat - it just makes it work better in the mix etc

* apply "low cut" on the guitars below 100-200 khz
* "scoop out" some middle frequencies, experiment and see what works with your sound
* add slight compression
* make the same eq adjustments to your synth over-dubs and your guitars.
* apply slight chorus effect
* multiband compressor - compress the lower frequencies of the guitar sound

The most important thing is probably to tweak your guitar sound correctly before you record it. I would advise you try to get a cool riffing sound - which sounds good on it's own. Then roll off the bass and drive (having too much of these will make it sound bad when you add multiple over-dubs). Also make sure there is a little mid range (some people choose to completely scoop the mid range away which make the sound hard to work with).

That's all I can think of for now...!

Real amp! A peavey triple X amp through a Hughes & Ketner "Red Box" (it's a speaker simulator so that you easily can plug your amp to the computer without using a mic - it sounds awesome!).

Posted by: Skalde Mar 22 2009, 09:24 PM

didn't know about this device, can you load .wav impulses for different sounds?

That was a pretty german and guitar performance :'D
