Tripeggio With Pinky Stretch (Tripeggio Lick)

INTRO:

This lick is based on and similar too QUICK LICKS #20. However, in this one, we are going to use a PINKY STRETCH to get your pinky accustomed to making a long stretch and sticking the landing. Don't be thrown off by this lick. Yes, it's a pinch difficult, especially if you have not spent as much time on your pinky as you might have. It's a good chance to get your pinky up to the condition of your other fingers. It's also a very fun lick to play and it sounds quite impressive. So you can pull it out when folks ask "do you play guitar?". BAM throw this at em smile.gif

Here is the tablature. As always, start SLOW, don't worry about playing this fast. Just focus on playing it CLEAN Speed is a byproduct of precision. Just like previous quick licks, this lick works as a warmup, practice and solo lick. Don't over stress on getting it just right, or fast enough. This is just about learning the lick. Once you have it you can start it anywhere on the neck to play it in any key.

*NOTE:
I'm using my first finger on my left hand to slightly press against the first string in order to mute it. You need the A string to resonate enough for the pinky tap to be heard so don't over mute with your right hand. Also, sticking the landing with the pinky is CRUCIAL so try not to cheat and use the first three fingers if at all possible.

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS
This lick is not connected to a backing track. You can play it with a backing track if you like. Anything based in the key of E should work just fine. For our purposes here, just playing with a metronome or click track is more than fine

BTW:
The shape change make take your hand a moment to get used to.

My take Sarge! Great riffimg idea! I tried to crank up the speed a little bit and it will rock when I get smoother transitions in the future!

FIRST TO FIGHT!! First Blood Spilled YET AGAIN by THE SPARTAN!!!

You do your countrymen and your GMC Brethren proud. Always quick to jump on the latest challenge. You set a great example to be sure. You really jumped in and took it by the throat. The work you did on the last QUICK LICKS is serving you well here. Also, the work you have done working on your PINKY and your STRETCH is serving you well also. You have a very good and steady pace, your muting is solid, picking is spot on and you are "STICKING THE LANDING" with the pinky which is the toughest part of this lesson. The shape changes as it goes and the stretch gets bigger. So it gets harder as you go and you nail it. I was not expecting that kind of precision/speed so quickly. Very impressive. In other words you just...

LEVELED UP!!!

(Also you are still our only current Star of Honor holder for Quick Licks as you are the only GMCer to complete every single one!)

Well played but you are playing last weeks lick from the looks of it. In lesson 21, we add another note on the last hammer on /pull off. Take one more look at the tab and just re submit this one to lesson 20. It's spot on for 20!

PERFECT!!!! This is exactly what I was looking for. The timing is smooth, the strikes are clean, the muting is spot on, and best of all, the PINKY is SUPERB. This lick is really all about having a level of mastery on the tripeggio, which you clearly have, and it requires that you not only do all of that, but also demands that you stick the landing with the pinky. This is probably one of the hardest ones we have ever done. Per usual, you made it look easy. Not only all of that, you played it at speed! Didn't miss a note or a beat. You set the bar VERY high and I hope it inspires other GMCers to want to be better and play at this level. In other words you just killed it and..

LEVELED UP!!!

Pinky Speed trap part 2!!!! The pinky pattern is the killer on this one. I'm playing it briskly in demo just to show you what it will sound like after many hours of practice. I don't expect you to sit down and be able to play it properly at that speed right away. It will take time. The pinky is the most important part of this lick. It's also the most difficult part. Slow down quite a bit on this one and focus on getting that pinky hammer on part spot on. Then you'll have it!!Going about this speed (from CAEL, he's picking the hammer on part, but that's fine as long as the pattern is correct) is just fine. Also, make sure there is enough volume to hear the pinky and dial back a pinch on distortion so that each note is distinct.

SUPER PERFECT. It's all there, the double down stroke, the pinky hammer on, the pinky reach, nice. This is a great example of how to play this lick. I could replace my original video with this one and be happy as a clam. Nice guitar as well!!! You have taken that gal and really made her in to a nice bit of kit!! I've noticed them spiking up in price recently for some reason. I'm not sure why. Maybe they are getting more rare?

You have a great handle on all the bits needed to play this well. Muting is on point, picking is on point, hand sych is spot on. You make it look easy!! The double down stroke throws folks off and the pinky think throws many as well. You nail both of them and do it with control and verve.

In other words, you just...
LEVELED UP!!!!

BINGO!!!! That's the big pinky stretch I wanna see!!!! Being able to stick the landing with a pinky is crucial imho. It gives the hand way much more reach than relying on the first three fingers alone. It's part and parcel to becoming a fine lead player!!! You clearly have a good grasp on this lick. Like many of these, it also makes a good warm up lick. Run it up the neck, run it down the neck, work on stamina, etc. Solid work here. You got this one!!!

Take 1 for scrutiny Todd. This was a tricky one and my pinky blister pulls the string sharp because it catches onto the string sad.gif

Nice!! I gotta be honest, I lost my mind and made a quick lick that should have been in lesson 430 in bootcamp. But, since bootcamp has reached completion, I thought maybe i"d put a crazy lick or few in Quick Licks. I'm honestly deeply impressed that you can play this. It has a HUGE stretch that requires the pinky to stick the landing each and every time over and over and over. Hand fatigue sets in quick unless one is quite careful on technique. I plan to try to keep quick licks a bit more on the "quick" side and less on the crazy side. Now and then I'll throw something crazy in, and this was one of the crazy ones. Assymetrical, stretch, Econ Picking, all the bits that make a lick tricky stuffed in to one lick. I was probably drinking Death Wish Coffee when I wrote this. Great coffee!! But it's a pinch strong. smile.gif
You sorted the pinky, the econ picking and the assymetrical pattern all at once. NICE! This lick, like the one before it, makes a great speed drill. You can shred the crap out of this with enough repetition as you get 6 notes for only two pick strikes. So it leverages the power of the pull off to let you attain some sick speed. Keep this one in your bag of tricks!!! You just.. LEVLED UP!!!! Still our very very TOP DAWG in QUICK LICKS!!!!!

NICE!!!!! A little string noise at the end but the main part of being able to STREEEEETTTTCCHH that pinky out there and stick the landing is what this one is all about and you NAILED IT!!!!
Super congrats. This lesson is NOT easy. It's yet another Neo Classical bit smile.gif You played it quite well. It's great to see you coming along so well!!!! Awesomness. Try this on all the strings. IT will force your hand to find angles of adjustment. As for this one, stick a fork in it cause it is DONE! you just...
LEVELED UP!!!!!
