Hey guys

I was wondering if anybody might have some suggestions how to improve my timing and rhythm, I have practiced with a metronome but im a bit confused on how to break certain riffs up to count with the metronome

How about a short explanation and a link to a lesson?

The short form is this: standard metronome clicks are "beats" just like we count "beats per minute" or BPM. What's not always immediately clear is that these are quarter notes in common time (4/4). To play other durations against the metronome click we are training ourselves to keep proper time even between those clicks.

If I remember it all correctly, goes like this:

- four clicks per note = whole note
- two clicks per note = half note

- one note per click = quarter note
- two notes per click = eighth note
- three notes per click = eighth note triplet
- four notes per click = sixteenth note
- six notes per click = sixteenth note triplet

Kris prepared a nice long lesson about metronome use (and note durations) that will help loads: that lesson is here.

May I suggest the 3 notes over 2 beats and 3 notes over four beats as a good thing to practise. It's pretty tough, but really help the timing.
