Check my recent post in this topic for the sound clip.

Sorry it's taken so long guys!

My DR Z airbreak is in the post and should arrive tomorrow, at which point I will get down to recording a couple of sound clips of the amp when cranked. Both with clean and overdrive!

I'm so excited as I STILL haven't been able to crank it enough to get much drive (well I did once and it was IMMENSE, but shh... the neighbours will never know).

Sorry for the teaser topic tongue.gif Just wanted to make sure I have to get some clips up for tomorrow for you guys as promised!

That's great man, congratulations. Can't wait to hear those samples! I'm considering in buying attenuator myself! smile.gif

I've done a lot of research on what attenuator to get, and I came down to the THD and the DR Z models. They are both very well known for not sucking your tone away. The Dr Z is very good because it accepts any Ohmage and upto 100W, reducing down to under 1W.

The THD gets just as much praise, I just wanted the DR Z over it because of its simplicity. The THD seems to have extra dial knobs for tone control - and I don't really want that.

Here it is!

Some general fiddling around, spot the technical mistakes and chord misses, there's lots!

Changed a number of settings during the recording. Started with a mid spring reverb setting and reasonably cranked master and mid volume with the cut pretty much off. The cut dial switches between sounding vintage marshall, deep and bassy, and fender style with sparkling cleans and highs.

I switch the cut at one point later on in the recording to give an impression.

All these takes are straight into the amp, no effects. Just onboard reverb and an attenuator bringing the volume down. The attenuator is a good one, doesn't suck the tone but naturally you can't quite hear the dynamics of the Celestion being drived.

Hope you like, sorry its so long!

Nice and pretty complete sound test man!
Thanks for sharing this!
What kind of attenuator did you use there?

Thanks man smile.gif I did A LOT of research on the attenuators. I can honestly say, they seriously improve your tone being able to crank your amp up, especially with mine as it's the only way to get natural overdrive!

In my research it came down to two options: THD hot plate and the DR Z Airbreak.

The THD gets fantastic reviews, and is build as solid as they get - no complaints of them breaking down or anything. For me there were too many extra dial knobs that I thought would effect my tone. These also have to be bought for the right Ohm level of your amp.

The DR Z Airbreak is my choice smile.gif It has two dials, 1 with 5 levels of defualt attenuation levels, ranging from hardly any to a huge amount! The second dial only works in conjunction with the first, when its set to "bedroom" level. This is supposed to take your upto 100W tube amp, down to under 1 Watt. My 18W still sounds pretty loud for bedroom levels at full attenuation, but it does a fantastic job.

Its great for me as I can rehearse with it at a lower attenuation and still be able to crank it smile.gif

I also like the DR Z because its a multi-Ohm attenuator, so you can plug any Amp into it (as long as its 100W or under).

The THD has a headphone out, or a DI, can't remember which... which might interest you for silent recording. No idea if its authentic in its sound replication.

Another make that people seem to use here, and agree with, is the Webber Mass (or similar name!) so be sure to check them out too smile.gif

A warning note, the cheaper attenuators that claim to be multi-ohmage are reported to have a very high fail rate. Something about the glue used in them over heating and causing fires. Not good! Also try to avoid ebay ultra CHEAP attenuators, as these are actually just volume knobs for effects loops smile.gif

Hey man, that sample sure sounds cool! Lots of dynamics indeed. I'll research the DR Z attenuator on the web. Thanks! smile.gif

If you guys want as true as possible pure tone out of a attenuator check this out:

http://www.ultimateattenuator.com/index.html

The Ultimate Attenuator is as close as pure tone as you'll get. I've tried them all and some are better than others, the bad cat leash was better than the DR Z airbreak but the UA stomps them all. The THDs made me throw up and it's the most ridiculous thing ever made, it's freaking horrific and worthless it sucks a ton of tone specially if you have a boutique amp. I tried a couple with my Einstein 100 watt and it was garbage. I tried two because the first one was so horrible that I thought it was defective.

The thing is I don't use my UA much because both my Elmwood and Diezel have incredible MVs that allow me to play at whisper levels and I mean whisper while getting most of the tone (without the speaker air push of course).

I highly recommend the UA though and if you could try one you'd see what I mean.
