I have noticed while playing my Jackson SLSMG lately, that I have started noticing the neck humbucker more while playing. It seems to get in the way so to speak and I hit it while playing. Am I the only one?

Picking habits - nothing more, nothing less.
Everybody picks diffrently and we all change our style little by little without noticing. I started to scratch my guitars while picking because my picking changed from playing live shows and rehearsals most of the time instead of home practice sitting down...

You can either try to change your habit of hitting the neck humbucker or live with the scratches^^

No... I've got quite some distance to the neck pu. Hitting it sounds a bit odd to me.

It also depends on the guitars construction!

You can always try to shift your hand position a bit. You might try lowering the humbucker in to the guitar body a bit more but this will change the tone a bit. There are little screws above and below each pickup that control how far it comes out of the housing.

Something may have changed as Zakk implies. I never noticed it until recently. I also started using Dava Control picks instead of Jazz III. That probably has something to do with it as well. I tried picking the strings in the center between the two pickups, but that just killed my left shoulder after about 30 minutes. I'll have to switch back to the Jazz III's and see if it still happens. As Todd suggested, I could also lower the pickup. It seems quite high in the Jackson, and I never use the neck pickup anyway...just don't like how it sounds.

I have an SLSMG as well. I never noticed that cuz I pick in the middle of the pickups. (I use the neck pickup for solos sometimes to get a mellow sound). But I always stay in the same spot when I pick, regardless of what I'm playing.

However, when I play on my Ibanez RG 350 DX, I sometimes scrap the pickup in the middle (single coil).

Possibly the pickup is too high? Or your picking is to close to the neck pickup? If it bothers your playing, it's time to adapt a bit.

It's happened to me too.

But with my old guitar, so I think that depends on how the guitar is built, I got used to it though, and didn't care anymore,

with my new guitar I haven't noticed that "problem"

Something similar happens to e with my Ibanez, only with the middle pup. Over time I don't notice it nearly as much, I guess I adapted to the new picking, digging a bit less with the pick etc.

It will take some time, possibly half, possibly full year, but the problem is not that big. It's not like you have to reverse the way strings are set
