I am scared I am losing my drive to play guitar. I want it so bad but I dont know what to practice or how to stick with anything. I think I need a actual guitar teacher. I think I need a mentor to help me with things I dont know. Someone in person. What should I do guys?

I think forcing yourself to learn something is a foolish ideology. I think if a person wants to learn something, you become mentally driven to do so. I think you either have to find your muse in life or just let it go. Maybe one day you will find what it is that makes you want to play without forcing yourself to do so.

I agree with VinceG, forcing yourself to anything won't bear good results. But if You are enthusiastic about playing, but just don't know what to do (IMO it is quite rare, as You can easily read what to do to improve for example on our forum), than maybe finding a live teacher can help. I will take 1-2 live "lessons" someday in the future, just to see if the teacher won't notice any bad habits in my playing.

Indeed, it's kind a pointless to push yourself without real will!!
So you need to find a better and faster way of motivation.
And as for practicing and learning,
I was always catching with something I've found cool and interesting, just like that,
perhaps you should try the same. smile.gif

yup no point forcing yourself to do it, I generally find that makes me lose motivation even more, as Muris said try looking around for something you find really cool and gets you interested, that works for me, motivation or inspiration to play dwindles from time to time, just take a break and enjoy the forums listening to some of your favourite tunes smile.gif

Everybody loses motivation once in a while, I tend to do it if I've been pushing myself too hard. Then I go out and do something else, and I always get the urge to go home and play guitar when I do other things. laugh.gif But yeah, a teacher is great, and if you get a good one it will boost your motivation a lot.

I am just getting out of one of those dry seasons.
It's normal.
What I do in those cases is just take a break and don't play...
That fixes it after about a week...

A mentor might be just what you need. I know sometimes I wish I had someone in real life that I could bounce things off of. My life is too busy right now to take time for lessons, so I come by GMC.

Maybe someone here is willing to take you under their wing until you find a local mentor.

Thats just it really, I feel like I dont know what to learn so for instance when I try to learn a song I start to think that I might not be ready for it and I freak and quit.

Maybe give a life teacher a try. Much depends on the way he teaches, I often got unmotivated by teachers more than motivated. But if the person is nice and friendly You forget about "teacher and student" thing, and just make the effort to spend the time with that person in a satisfying way.

When talking about being not sure about your skills:
1. learn some easier but good sounding lessons, to build up confidence (besides learning easier lessons gives quite much also IMO)
2. do the opposite, choose a hard lesson and start practicing it slowly, nothing as rewarding as learning something that required rising skill to higher level.
